Female Vocalists
Posted by: DaveBk on 26 August 2008
I'm looking to broaden my hoizons... I enjoy a wide range of female vocalists:
Amy MacDonald
Katie Melua
Amy Winehouse
Dido
Gabriella Cilmi
Julia Fordham
Alanis Morisette
Amy Lee - Evanescence
To name a few... but, I have recently be blown away by Claire Martin - 24bit/96kHz downloads from Linn Records.
Who else should I be listening to?

I'm surprised that Joni Mitchell has not been mentioned. Her voice has matured well for her later albums, for example Turbulent Indigo, Taming the Tiger and her latest release Shine.
An honourable mention also to Imogen Heap who makes her own albums.
I'm with you on Joni. I like all her work, really. I think live recordings are a good test for true vocal ability and she nails it on "Miles of Aisles"; but for me the real highlight is her performance of "Coyote" on The Last Waltz. Her phrasing, timing and emotion are hard to beat. It's not all about pitch - but she has astonishing ability there too.

So why didn't you post a picture of her - it looks nothing like the great Mary Chapin Carpenter.quote:There is only one woman you should consider listening to.
BTW are you going to start an album of the year thread?

Ah I'm getting confused again - was it the 1000 greatest albums thread - it's my age you know - I'm slowly, but surely losing memory in such matters. MCC is MCC - no more need be said really.quote:Originally posted by Whizzkid:quote:Originally posted by ROTF:So why didn't you post a picture of her - it looks nothing like the great Mary Chapin Carpenter.quote:There is only one woman you should consider listening to.

I don't dislike your choice, used to play Hong Kong Garden a lot: probably one of the best songs I've heard about a take-away restaurant - up there with There's A Man Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis from the great late Kirsty.

June Tabor - can't believe this thread's been going for 2 months without her. Try Abyssinians, particularly "A Smiling Shore".
Sandy Denny has already been mentioned - Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief is a good start - get the remastered cd issue for the spellbinding extra track "Quite Joys of Brotherhood". If you like that add Unhalfbricking and What We Did On Our Holidays, the former having "Who Knows Where The Time Goes".
