Boy is he miserable, if Johnny Dee hates music so much, why does he torture himself, and us, with his nasty little ramblings.

I quite agree that the Mandela concert is less than inspiring, but age being the only factor is just a cliche spread by such music journalists.

I saw Miles Davis a few weeks before his death in his 60s, and frankly there are few musicians who could match his level of energy. Art Blakey thumping the drums at 69 like a (very skilled) madman, and probably the my most enjoyed performance was by of late 50's musicians under name of Van Der Graaf Genrerator.

There are more ageing musicians who have plenty of creativity and energy, and yes many young musicians too. It is a matter of creativity not years, but that would be a bit more difficult for many music journalists to convey, so they rely on the same old cliches.

That said, there are plenty of musicians who can not sustain their creative peak over many years, but just that those years are not the only factor.

Yes but most of those bands were pretty tedious first time round. It seems very unlikely that they've got any better since then. I mean come on Simple Minds and Eddy Grant? Johnny Clegg might be ok though.
