I've got the latest BoC album Geogaddi and really enjoy it. I've seen another album locally but didn't see the title...it had a bluish, almost watercolour dipiction of people on the front.

Does anyone know what title is, how it compares to the latest and whether it's generally any good?

It's called "Music Has the Right to Children", their 1998 debut.

Well worth a look if you like Geogaddi.

When I first got "Geogaddi", I thought it very good, but notably inferior to "Music Has A Right...", which I reckoned was more coherent as an album.

However, it's grown on me. Last week I played them back-to-back, and while I still prefer the first one, it's marginal.

I'm curious - does anyone have the vinyl copies of "Geogaddi" and "Music Has the Right to Children"? Sound OK?

I can't give you a definite answer to this as I've only got the CDs, but as they are on Warp records the vinyl should be as good as any dance lps are these days. However the best thing is that there are a couple of BOC mini-album/EPs that seem to be easier to find on vinyl than on CD and are well worth looking out for.

I also have both albums, I bought "Geogaddi" first due to hearing it in a record shop.
Some of the tracks reminded me of Kraftwerk.
All the tracks quickly grew on me and became addictive late night listening.

I was so impressed with "Geogaddi" I bought "Music has the right to Children" a fortnight later.

Initially I was very disapponted, many of the tracks aren't as accessable as those on "Geogaddi". However MHTRTC gradually worked its magic and I now appreciate it at the same level as geogaddi.

Thats the problem with ambient music, during an initial listen its just pleasant sounds or weird noises. Some would call it a kind of non-descript back ground music.

However if one perseveres with ambient music then it can creep up on you and it works on a more sub concious level and can become very addictive.

I guess it depends (as so often) which one you came to first!

When the Eno ambients first emerged I was completely unmoved. What was the point? No tunes, no beat! And it was so quiet that you could hear every pop and click off the record.

A combination of CD arriving alongside advancing years has meant that I do now "get" this sort of music. It might warrant a thread all by itself...

I'm very fond of Steve Roach's music, particularly his collaboration with Kevin Braheny "Western Spaces" - an evocation of the deserts of the American South West. Not just washes of airy synths, it's beautiful.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm looking forward to picking the album up now if it's as good as Geogaddi. I think I also spied an EP, with a black cover perhaps? That could be a bonus find...

I've got the vinyl Geogaddi, and it is a very clean and good sounding pressing. All 5 sides - and the chunky gatefold itself is impressive. Just remember to check side 6 before playing!

I think both of these albums are excellent, although if pushed I would vote for MHTRTC as the better one. Both albums seem to be slow starters in that the better tracks are pushed towards the end. I'm not really sure why, but several of the tracks remind me of some of My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless', although I should stress that the results are very different.

From a sound perspective, it sounds like they had better equipment to hand by the time of Geogaddi.

There are three records, five sides and side six has a pretty picture ectched into it - a bit like the Voyager picture of Man. Nice piccy - not good for styli I guess...
