My partner's Acer laptop seems excellent for the fairly low price, so it might be worth having a look at them.

I'm afraid my Acer is winging its way back for repair for the second time in under 6 months - it's only just 18 months old too. The DHL guy who picked it up today said "Not another Acer going back for repair. I pick up at least one of these every day of the week!"
When it works it's fabulous, but I'm a bit fed up of it at the moment.

Regards,
Steve.

That's not acceptable and I hope you're making your displeasure known. No comfort to you but we've had occasional experiences like this with Dell, Compaq, Toshiba, Viglen, and others over the years. Early IBM pcs were bullet proof and beautifully built but more recently they're no different from anybody else. But it only takes one bad experience to colour your opinion of a particular supplier.

What? IBM are still making laptops? I think you meant the other Chinese-made, can't remember the name, maybe something sounds like Levano now? I got so disappointed with their ThinkPad model, it was the primary reason why I decided to give MacBook a try, and I'm glad that I did.
PS: I've always had the some kind of Toshiba or Dell given by my firm but they are so ugly, bulky and limited that I prefer to use my own while travelling.

IBM sold their PC business to Lenovo.

The one good thing about Lenovo laptops is that you can still order one with a matt screen. Do not understand why all of the other manufacturers have moved to glossy, reflective screens!

Peter I'm talking about many years ago. Do IBM make anything themselves these days?
We used to be an IBM site, back in the days when their kit was better built than most but then quality dropped while prices remained high and we started shopping round.
