Bluray audio, and my Naim system: how to upgrade?

Posted by: andrea on 05 December 2009

Well this is not maybe the right forum . . . but anyway.
I have an excellent 72, feed by a recapped hicap, and an old 110.
Speakers are old Goodmans.
I'm happy with the sound.
Having a PS3, and a new Pana 46G10, I tried a bluray, it was Transformers, the second movie.
Boy! the sofa started literally trembling under myself . . we were all amazed . . . I had to turn down the volume 3 times . . . I do not have a sub, but the effect was terrific.
Is this typical of BD?
And, would that be wort to substitute the 110 with a 140?
I have no chances of demoing . . . or I could have the 110 recapped, or upgraded to a 140 . . . any experienced advise?
many thanks and best regards
andrea

Careful, AV is a slippery slope!

I would not bother moving from 110 to 140, go straight to a 180 or 250.

Then upgrade the pre, then the speakers, then get a processor, then a centre speaker then...

Garyi, thanks . . . I steer away from the upgrading spiral, and this is good for wallet, and for soul as well.
The idea is that, since my 110 was bought in 1987 by me s/h, now must be wretched.
So, it is definitely the weak point into the chain. And very weak too.
Either I'm wrong, or I'm right.
If I'm wrong, I'll stay as I am. If I'm right, then, I could upgrade the 110 to 140, get an 140, or actually, go for a 250, if it is really that better on my "modest" chain.
Or else, I could let the little 110, and get, say, 3 more speakers to made a surround.
Or else?
Just an idea, but, I think I could get a second could really be in the market for a song: two 110 instead of one, could be a good idea. Mind, the speakers have only one input, so, no way of going active.
And so on . . . .
Any further advise/hint/experience?

Bare in mind if you go for a 250 will need a power supply for it.

Do you have a local dealer? They should be able to tell if your 110 needs a service and provide other advice. When I had a 72-Hicap I ran a 180 and it did sound very nice. BD does sound nice but so should normal telly through your system.

Well, that particular BD was above the average . . . . I mean, of other BDs. Anyway, please do not mention local dealers down here . . . . it hurts Frown
So far I am not getting any useful hint . . . well, the 110 is an old chap, and it is probably unlikely to have into the forum somebody who did compare it against other power amps.
Best regards
