Artists you are surprised not to see discussed on this forum.
Posted by: JamieL on 07 March 2009
I have been a member here for just over a year, and I am constantly surprised the width and depth of discussion of music here. Pretty much every artist who interests me has been discussed at some point over the last year.
Obviously when artists release new albums there is a lot discussion. In contrast there are artists who were very much part of their time, or passing hype, for example I would not expect to see discussions of, Five Star, A1 or Sigue Sigue Sputnik.
One artist I am surprised to not have seen discussed is Duran Duran, not a favourite of mine, but a huge selling band who reformed not long ago. I also don't think I have seen much mention of Depeche Mode (I might be wrong on that, Violator has probably been on the 'now playing' threads a few times).
I also do not seem to remember any Marilyn Manson (Brian Warner) discussions.
Are there any artists other people are surprised to not have seen discussed?
(Waits for numerous links to threads on Duran Duran and Depeche Mode I have missed).

Japan, the thinking man's Duran Duran, they were like a Duran Duran from an alternate universe...
Dead Can Dance
YMO the Japanese Kraftwerk
Os Mutantes
interesting about Duran Duran, I was only about 5 or 6 when they came out and it seemed only young girls listened to them, but now I actually don't mind the first two albums and b-sides from that period. For a "Boy Band" they were actually quite talented, and played their own instruments ( Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor played them very well in fact ), and wrote their own songs. Today Boy-Bands are, well, you know.... a girl dragged me to a Duran Duran show years ago and I remember being very very surprised how much better they were than I thought they would be.
I have a couple of bass player friends who think Mick Karn from Japan is truly one of the Bass Gods, up there with Entwhistle ,Squire,Bruce etc etc. I think Interestingly that Richard Barbieri, the keyboard player from Japan plays or played with the popular progish band Porcupine Tree. David Sylvian of course went on to make some fantastic albums, even some good ambient ones.....
Love Depeche Mode
cheers

Jaime,
I don't know if you've heard but Ultravox have reformed with all the original members, including Midge of course, and are doing live dates.
The Original Ultravox would not have Midge at all, John Foxx was the original vocalist on the first two....

I could have missed it, but Pixies and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion don't seem to get much mention. JSBX are favourites of mine, but Pixies are imo, one of a very elite group of artists who are consistently great (I can't think of a duff track or album).

They don't get enough coverage IMHO but we did have quite a bit of discussion when the new mini LP set came out.

Los Lobos for me here in LA, local guys, wonderful masculine latin sound. Town and the City gets put on often.

I am a massive Emmy The Great fan and am still quite surprised at either the polarisation or indifference she engenders in a lot of people.
Comments from friends with whom I have, at the very least, an overlap of tastes have included: "rather annoying", "boring" and "not as good as Laura Marling".
I'm not sure I can explain exactly why I like her so much. She just seems to have a good attitude, an excellent way with words, a good sense of humour, some very fine melodies and what I have described before as a "perfectly imperfect voice" (in a similar way to say Neil Young or David Bowie).
Still, I am obviously dysfunctional as I simply don't get Radiohead!

Love them, but it seems they are not as broadly popular these days.

I can't recall any threads on Pink Floyd or Steely Dan.

Now guys I am really surprised there haven't been heavy discussion on the greatest electronic band of all time AUTECHRE being the open minded folks that you are.

Aren't they the only group ever invited to Blackpool to turn off the lights.
BTW - there are not many folk music threads on this forum - guess I'm the only one who likes it.
Plus I seem to be the only one that likes Gracie Fields, Marie Lloyd, George Formby, Chas n Dave and Hatfield & the North: as I've never seen anybody else mention any of these great artists.

I do like Folk as well as you though.

The Magic Bullet Band (a Brighton band, who I saw supporting Kula Shaker in their trial re-form tour in 2006.)
Really interesting sound. A bit like Fleet Foxes, but in advance, so to speak...
If you live in striking distance of Brighton, you might yet get to see them somewere.

I really enjoy looking at the 'What are you listening to right now?' thread as it gives me tons of music to search out (usually on Spotify, I'm still its biggest disciple, lol).
There is usually a lot of older material discussed on this forum, so it is a pleasant surprise when new stuff gets talked about, in particular 'electronic' stuff like Autechre and I've seen a few interesting posts about dubstep (Burial, Scuba, etc, one of my favourite genres at the moment).
I'm disappointed by the way rap often gets (mis)treated on the forum - quite often ignored or disparaged.
And, as I've just got tickets to see him, Michael Jackson. I don't care what you think of him (and actually I've got very little sense of humour about him as I love him so much), but Off the Wall and Thriller are stone cold classics, and Bad and Dangerous are very close to being classics as well. Thriller is perhaps the ultimate combination of musical quality and commercial appeal (cue plenty of hate...)

Agreed, hip/rap has been the most creative genre (maybe with electronica) for years, but snobbish attitudes are very common when it comes to poor black kids trying to be artistic, and non-creative genres seem more palatable/less challenging to some.

@ Mat Cork: I think it's actually some of your posts that have shown me there are other rap/hip-hop listeners on here!
Currently digging Flying Lotus at the moment (very weird 'hip-hop') but I don't expect to see much about him on here...

I know some of the subject matter can shine light where I maybe don't want to look, but Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan all amazingly talented. I love the instrumental stuff as well like DJ Shadow (Endroducing is briliant on vinyl), Dr Octagon, Req etc...and some of the stuff on Mo Wax is imo, at the cutting edge of musical creativity these days.
Posted on: 11 March 2009 by reubs1981
If 'Illmatic' is the best straight rap album ever recorded, then 'Endtroducing..' is the greatest hip-hop album, period! I remember back in 2007 me and the wife went to see him 3 times, once up in Gateshead at the Sage which involved a 400 mile roundtrip!

Yep I saw him at Norwich reubs, he was incredible...

Late '70's and early '80's electronica could do with more coverage.
This was a great period with new kit pushing the boundaries futher than before. For me Caberet Voltaire were one of the great bands of the time.

Agreed Jono and then onto the bleep scene in Sheffield and Warp Records etc - loads of amazing stuff.

Another great band of time was D.A.F. who are performing together again. Although they did have very "interesting" cover shots on the two main albums.
