RGB1 cable connection between DVD5 and Pioneer PDP-LX5090

Posted by: agent provocateur on 01 November 2009

I've just got hold of a 2 metre Naim RGB1 cable for use between my DVD5 and Pioneer PDP-LX5090. Haven't been able to find any specific info re: the connections. Looking at the 2 product manuals I can see that the sockets on both for green (Y), blue (Pb) and red (Pr) are straight forward enough but am unsure which sockets are for the white and black on the DVD5 and if there are sockets for these on the Pioneer plasma. I am right in presuming I should simply connect up by only using the green, blue and red ones in this particular situation. I should add that I have the DVD5 connected up to an AV2 via 2 5 pin to 5 pin DIN leads for audio.

Kind Regards

The DVD5 has DVI output. This is the one to go for. You need a DVI to HDMI cable (these are common). This should be the best.

Failing that you can use the YPbPr output.

Sorry to disagree Winky, but component is IMO a better choice: DVI and HDMI have too many compatibility issues and the analog output is so good on the DVD5.

Agent,
you only need to connect the 3 cables as you have done. Even if you have 5 connections on your display, you can't use them: Macrovision prohibit the use of the best analog connection (RGBHV) on commercial movies.

Manu,

If it was me, I'd perhaps try comparing them. It may be true that the video DAC in the DVD5 may well be outstanding, but it isn't like the old days of CRTs. The Pioneer will convert it back to digital to display it anyway. If the compatibility isn't an issue, why convert to analogue at all? I'm running DVI-HDMI connectors on a DVD player on our second TV with no issues at all. The analogue YPbPr was clearly worse in terms of quality.

A lot of the apparent DVI/HDMI compatibility issues actually relate to the copy protection bullshit (HDCP) on hi-def. This unfortunately isn't an issue for the DVD5.

I think a lot really depends on the analogue inputs of the particular screen being used...As Richard Dane explains here he chooses Naim's component cable in preference to DVI...

Personally I think I would always gravitate towards DVI/HDMI (oh how nice it would be to have a AV3 with it!) but it would be an interesting comparison...Expensive cable though !

Hi Manu

Thanks for the confirmation. I've already been using a DVI to HDMI connection but saw the Naim RGB1 cable going for a good price so thought I'd make the comparison and see for myself which I preferred.

Kind Regards

Hi Steve

Thanks for the link. Did you ever get round to getting yourself a DVD5 and if so make the comparison with a RGB1 cable with your Pioneer?

Kind Regards

Hi there Stuart,

I have a DVD5 lined up - basically for DVD-A use - but as you can see here I'm still in progress, so not quite ready yet...!

Come the time, if I can loan the component cable easily enough, I'll give it a spin for curiosity, but as I've said I think I would tend to go via DVI to match everything else (HDMI) - unless there is a large noticeable difference - and besides, it wouldn't be my main viewing source anyhow...

Steve.
