Nick Cave

Posted by: krak on 23 November 2005

I have just been introduced to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I presently have:
No More Shall We Part
Nocturama
The Boatman's Call
and his latest double CD Abattoir Blues.
I can't stop listening to The Boatman's Call, No More Shall... and Nocturama. I've heard Murder Ballads and it did not appeal to me at all. Are there any other works of his similar to Boatmans and No More... that would be worth purchasing?

Thanks in advance!

I suppose you like his acoustic works best. Might be worth checking out "The Good Son". I'm a big fan of Nick Cave. Also try "Let Love In", a bit more electric but with some very nice slower songs.

I just bought "b-sides and rarities".
A 3-CD set.

It's wonderful!

The Boatman's call is a cracker, I doubt you will do better. Didn't get along with Nocturama though.

I love 'Boatman' and chunks of the recent double CD but the 'Best Of' compilation made me realise I might not be as keen on the earlier ouput. As a suggestion if you like 'Boatman' then give Leonard Cohen a listen (Ten New Songs a great place to start).

Another vote for B sides and rarities - I love the rawness of the earlier output, but if you like Boatman then you could do worse than give Mick Harvey's (one of the Bad Seeds) new album a go.

Give Murder Ballads another go. It's absolutely hysterical, but not one to play when the children are around.

quite! particularly the curse of millhaven, one of the funniest songs ever written, up there with the call of the wighat by the cramps...

Agreed, but 'The Mercy Seat' must be one of the scariest songs ever. It winds itself into a crescendo that never fails to give me goosebumps.

I'd love to hear a Nick Cave/Tom Waits collaboration album!

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I think I will try The Good Son firstly, however I strongly agree with Nodrog, a Tom Waits/Nick Cave collaboration would be brilliant! Being an avid fan of Tom Waits, Nick Cave just seems like a scarier more demented version of Tom but equally as talented musically and lyrically.

I actually prefer Johnny Cash's version of Mercy Seat - it's on one of the American albums and well worth a spin.

"Let Love in" and "Live Seeds" are 2 of my favourites

I've found little to compete with Boatman's Call and No More Shall We Part from his earlier work, these two albums I think are by far his best. I do however also really like Murder Ballads
