The whole album to listen to at very low quality. It sounds fantastic.

Well spotted.
I'm not so sure it's such a great idea to post the whole album so early though. I'd rather they'd done the same as they did with 2VN and just gave 30 second snippets of each track as a taster.
BTW Those review links from Metzgers site make some interesting reading don't they? The one referred to in another topic on here regarding the joys of DVD-Audio made quite depressing reading. Ewwwwwww. Whatever next?
If it's not released on vinyl then I might just wait and download it for free from somewhere on the net.
I think they've sold out a bit.

Who do you think has sold out?
Anyhow check the other 'Everything must go' thread. I think the new ones getting a vinyl pressing although I'm not certain.

Shurely shome mishtake
Have a look here:-
http://www.101cd.com/search/artistall.asp?artist=STEELY+DAN#japan
This implies that two different versions of the new album were released in Japan on 01/01/2000.
I have some older 'Dan' albums via this UK site which are made in Japan, and they are without doubt, the ultimate in sound quality. Better than the USA made versions.
Don't even mention the EU produced crap we get here; made by chimpanzees in Czechoslovakia and Germany!

Hey Juanita You been at the Whiskey?
Simon. I don't begrudge the guys success one iota. The Warner Brothers multimedia thing is the sell out AFAIC. Why no SACD release frinstance?
Bloody record companies.
O BTW JN - you were So right about the 202. Bloody good isn't it?
P - I just bought a new LP12 not a DVD-A player!!

Because Steely Dan are on a Warner label, and Warner is a firm (the main one, as far as record labels go) DVD-A supporter.

I think Steely Dan are a really clever & talented duo but they just don't get me excited. I bought a best of a little while ago and to be honest I found it all a bit too samey samey and slick. I think 'FM' is probably one of the catchiest songs ever written though!

They have the abilty to polarise opinion like no other band I know.
Without wanting to sound patronising you probably need to listen to it maybe another dozen times minimum. Like a lot of things worth having in life they require input and effort initially but pay back in spades later.
I have been listening to the aja album regularly for over 25 years. It NEVER tires. This is quite unique amoungst my record collection and that says it all really.

'Thrill' and 'Ecstasy' for me
Like you Simon; I have been enjoying the first two (proper!) albums for 30 years and never tire of them.
Remarkable stuff.

Same here
As a fifteen year old I bought Reeling in the Years as a single when it came out and I've been with them ever since.Through thick and thin.

I was fortunate enough to hear EMG today on DVD-A - and I have to say it is way, way better than 2VN. The rhythm tracks are so deep and mean and the lyrics cynical and touching at the same time in the way only the Dan can do when at their best.
Favourite track The Things I Miss The Most - a real 'feeling sorry for myself but at the same time a little bit relieved that I'm on my own' thing like What A Shame About Me - but better!
The whole album hit me as being much more immediate and natural sounding whereas 2VN took me ages to get past the cold, sterile sound.
I reckon I'm gonna be well happy on 10 June when I get my mits on my copy!.

Fortunate you.
I managed to catch "The Last Mall" on radio2 this morning (Call me uncool but I like answering most of the questions on the pop quiz thing there whilst I'm driving)
You've really got me curious here though. How did you to get to here it so early and what sort of DVD-A system did you here it on?
Do tell

All I can say is 'contacts' (cos someone could get seriously bollocked otherwise!) - system was a Toshiba DVD, amp, telly (don't know model names as DVD-A is not my bag - although I could be convinced!) and some speakers I didn't recognise. Heard a couple of tracks back again on surroundsound - excellent if a lttle harsh and weird to a Rega/Naim man like me!

I will try and get some of their original stuff on vinyl and take it from there. I do think they would benefit from slightly grittier production though.

I thrashed Steely Dan when I was in my teens and Aja was a formative experience for me. I'm not sure why but I was mildly disappointed with Gaucho and although there was much to like about their last album ("Almost gothic" would have been at home on "The royal scam") it has never really been that important to me, I think because Walter Becker's guitar playing isn't quite up to the sublime standard of Denny Dias (RIP), Dean Parks, Larry Carlton and co.
Nothing I have read about Steely Dan agrees with my feelings on Gaucho. Am I alone on this ?
The one track I have heard from the new album sounds very promising ..

I bought this today for £5.99 on Vinyl - brand new! Is this one of their better albums? I will continue my Steeley Dan odessey with Aja and Goucho probably.
Posted on: 03 June 2003 by Simon Matthews
£5.99 - good price! Is it a recent french pressing or simply vinyl?? Neither are a patch on the original abc pressing IMO (but you can'ty Knock the price). A brilliant album.
If you like it then it really is impossible not to get into aja also.
By the way, MSN via andymetzgers site (at top of thread) has started playing the entire new album again today - track 4 'Godwhacker' is classic dan.

Hi, it was a Simply Vinyl issue that I bought at Selectadisc. They did have a 2nd hand copy for £2.50 but it had a few scratches on it so I passed. I also bought the Cat Power record for a tenner on vinyl.
Posted on: 03 June 2003 by Simon Matthews
Do you mean Reckless a few doors down? I thought selectadisc (Berwick st) is only new stuff.
Posted on: 03 June 2003 by P
Does he mean the Last Mall?
I see HMV are still offering pre-ordering on Vinyl? Amazon ain't. What gives? I can't find out for sure what's going on and it's driving me nuts (or nuttier - or whatever)
P
"Steely Dan Everything Must Go - Available June the 10th" - Grrrrrrr

As usual HMV don't know their arse from their elbow. No vinyl plans for warner/reprise to press Everything must Go on vinyl at this point.

I always had Steely Dan filed under 'one of those boring seventies bands my dad liked' but reading this thread I just might have to get 'aja'!

Funny you should say that....
I found it and registered my interest there this very morning.
Unfortunately I also found a very easy way to spend another £200!
Will wait and see what happens on the EMG front.

There is life outside London - it was Selectadisc Nottingham I went to. The record I bought was new, I think it was an end of line. I had a qick listen yesterday and it sounds promissing although to be honest it was a bit overshadowed by a Basie/Sinatra albumn that cost me £2.95!
