Using outlook in firefox?
Posted by: manicatel on 19 January 2007
I've just started to use Firefox, due to me getting ever more cheesed off with IE6/IE7 & updates which kept on freezing my PC.
So my question,as a Firefox numpty is this ;-
I have no tool in the toolbar for going to outlook express. To do this,I have to come out of firefox & go to OE, which is longwinded. What am I missing here? Go easy on me,
matt.

I have no idea what you are on about, I thought that windows had a task bar at the bottom you could stick express into.
Never the less, have you tried looking through the addons bit its in one of the menus and takes you to the website where you will find hundreds of addons for firefox.
One other thing, if you find this terribly inconvenient, why the hell do you use XP, the whole thing is a mess haha

thanks for the reply
I will try to clarify.
Along the top of the page of firefox, I have a toolbar. In it there are the usual things I am familiar with from IE6, eg tools for refresh the page, history, print, cut, paste, back a page, fwd a page etc. From the "customize the toolbar" menu, you can add other tools, such as adding seperators, new tabs, google stuff etc. I would have thought that I could have added a tool to launch OE from the toolbar, as I could from IE.
OK, I can do it from the bottom rhs instead, but it seems like an omission to me. I will trawl through the add-ons, but I thought some gright-spark out there may give me a quicker method. Apparently not.

Matt - if you're using outlook express (clearly want freebie email client) and are enjoying firefox - give Thunderbird a try (it's from Mozilla also). It's way more fully featured than OL express, and less likely to be exploited. and it's free!
HTH, YMMV.

Rico,
Thanks for that. Once I've decided whether or not to stick with firefox, I'll take a look at thunderbird as well.

Thunderbird has a built in Junk Filter and is a lot safer than Outlook Express, which is basically crap when it comes to security.
If you want a calendar, go to the Mozilla site and try Sunbird.

Thanks for all the replies guys,
I've started to use thunderbird, & it looks good to me. Early days, but I can't see myself getting rid of firefox or thunderbird now. The junk filter in t.bird is a nice touch.

I find that Firefox, Gmail and Thunderbird work well together and as each is quite flexible together they meet most if not all of my browsing and email requirements. I don't have much need for the Thunderbird junk filter as all but one or two junk emails a month are caught by the spam filters run by Gmail but I have made a lot of use of the Openpgp encryption extension that allows me to keep things hidden from most prying eyes when using Gmail.
A big thumbs up for Firefox, Thunderbird and Gmail.

Hey Roy T - can you give a little more on this thingy? Sounds interesting!
Thanks also Peter C for the mention of Sunbird.

Rico,
The extension you need for Thunderbird is https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/71/ and it installs as a button on the Thunderbird tool bar.
You now install Gnupg after first reading the project homepage at http://enigmail.mozdev.org/
I have had this working correctly for an age on MS XP and for the past couple of months on Ubuntu Linux (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20060601 Firefox/2.0.0.1 (Ubuntu-edgy))
Further gnupg info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnupg
