Sub-woofers and volume

I would love to add an N-Sub to my SBL system. However I never get the opportunity to play my system at anything like a reasonable volume. Does the sub need a decent volume to operate? Is there any point in having a sub if your system is only played at low volumes?

Actually, yes. In my opinion, subs work very well at low volume levels. They provide a bit of "punch" that you couldn't otherwise get at those volumes. Don't overdo the volume of the sub relative to the mains. Subs work best when you can't explicitly hear them. (movie FX notwithstanding)
Advice is always to try it first, though.

...and in my opinion too! Well worth trying and they add rather more to the sound than just low-frequency thump.

I'm using a REL505 with Focal 1027Be floor standers and I think having the sub on does improve the music. The speaker itself hardly moves at all but it seems to improve the fullness of the sound.
