Damien Rice ....... Turin Brakes

Caught Damien's sold out Portland show last night .... excellent. Acoustic guitar, bass, drums, cello. Have you ever heard Purple Haze on the cello ... very cool. Encore was front edge of stage, totally acoustic - no mic, no guitar amplification, just his voice and the acoustic guitar and the dead silence of the room (650 peoople). Impressive.

Can anyone tell me about Turin Brakes. Will be seeing them (?) in Pdx on Oct 11, but know little about them. Am going primarily for the opener - Matthew Ryan.

Good listenin'

Jeff

You'll enjoy Damien Rice's new CD 'O'. He's a great lyricist - 'Canonball' rips your heart out.

Delightfully different.

P.S. I always think that you're another Jeff Anderson - a friend who lives in the same village as me!

I have "o" and like it very much. Most of his popularity here I believe is word-of-mouth so far. He opened for Coldplay in Oregon this summer and many in the crowd last night were back for more.

It is a pretty common name, Swedish/English on my father's side, all English on my mother's side (Kitson).

Not quite sure what's happened with this album. It was out a long while ago (maybe even last year) but suddenly seems to be being promoted in the record shops and has made the lower regions on the album charts

Thanks for the feedback.

Saw the Turin Brakes/Matthew Ryan show last night in Portland and enjoyed very much.

Turin Brakes said this was the first time through the states and feels like when they were starting out in UK/Europe. The crowd last night was about 50-75 people. This was my first exposure to them, but everyone else obvioulsy knew them well, singing along and dancing. The songs, for me, could have been stronger lyrically, but they do create an interesting "sound". Two acoustic guitars, keyboards and the harmonies. Seals and Crofts for the new millenia?

The reason I went was Matthew Ryan. I love this guy .... a poor man's Springsteen (Little Steven and Bruce looked pretty silly posturing on the Grammys .... seems they have become a charicature of themselves)? The crowd for Matthew numbered about 20 for his opening set, he seemed frustrated with the turn-out and the venue, but persevered through 7 or 8 songs on vocals and acoustic accompanied by a partner on electric guitar and lap steel on one song. Now we are talking songwriting. Someday I look forward to seeing him in an appropriate venue and with a deserved larger crowd. Till then I will enjoy my little secret. www.matthewryanonline.com

Sorry for the poor spelling of caricature ... it just didn't look right without the "h" and I didn't take time to check before posting.

Horrors ... have I just become one myself ;-)
