TT vs CD-3.5

Posted by: Alco on 04 June 2001

Howdy folks,

the analog-bug bit me (again)a couple o weekse ago.I'm (patiently,...well,trying to be,that is)
searching for a (s/h) turntable to use with my Nait-2. I know the Nait has a fine phono-stage,so
I'd like to use it.

I'd like a TT that's on the same level (or better!) as my Naim CD-3.5 (+ f/c)

Now, I could go 2 different ways:

1: Buy a "cheap" TT so I have enough money left to buy me some vinyl. (still got about 25 left, sniff)

or

2: Buy me the best I can afford, and be patient with building a new vinyl-collection.

The following decks came to my mind:

A s/h Thorens TD166 or TD160 with Rega rb300 arm,fitted by a dealer.

A Pro-ject "Debut". Which would save me a LOT of money to spent on vinyl, but the qualities of this deck wouldn't complement my system, I'm afraid.

I can get me a (demo) Project 6.1 for 190 UKP.
(ugly as hell)

Rega Planar-3. : Also ugly,but affordable,musical,
capable of accepting better catridges.

A s/h Linn LP12/Valhalla/Ittok/K18 which I can get for 3000,- Dutch guilders. (about 750 UKP)

A Linn Axis/Akito for about 375 UKP

...Any suggestions would be welcome.

Greetings,
Alco.

I helped a friend pick up a 1987 lp12 with basic arm for 180ukp. Originally he was thinking about a rega planer 3. He is over the moon with the performance he is getting now from vinyl, he didn't spend money he hasn't got and he has the perfect basis for upgrading. When he has some more cash to spend he can pick up an ittok or something similar. If he spots something with all the bells and whistles he can sell the whole deck with absolutely no loss of money. I would recommend stretching to an lp12 as it creates loads of options for the future

Not up to the standard of your 3.5 unfortunately. On the Rega front you'll have to go up to the P25, inmho. The P3 has the same forward sound. It doesn't pitch all that well, and pr&t suffers when the music gets busy. The P3 is about on the same level as a Planet. A 3.5 is miles better. If you can stretch that far, Geoff Coleman of Acoustica, chester rebuilds second-hand LP12s for about 400 pounds. Now you're talking!

I'd go for a used LP12 with a simple arm. I have a LP12/Rega combo that cost around 400 UKP. Just an idea - ask your dealer if he has any used cartridges lying around. They are often left when people upgrade and some of them can be quite unused. I have a Linn Klyde now. My vinyl has never sounded better.

Then buy records!

Thanx, Y'all

I'd like to get my hands on a s/h LP12 as well, but here in Holland they are pretty hard to find on the s/h market.
Well, at least not for the 'giveaway' prices they're sold for in England.

They'll cost me at least about 2000,- Dutch guilders. (500 UKP) (often without arm!)

is it wise to buy one and let it be send to me by post ?
(eek, seems kinda spooky to me,such a delicate piece of equipment)

Has any of you heard the Clearaudio "Champion"?
(got some rave reviews and looks awesome to me!)
