"Modern Times" after several listens.....

.....I like it!
I didn't like "L&T" apart from a couple of songs, this one's a bit of "L&T" with a dollop of "TOOM" to my ears and all the better for it. It's a typically lazy Dylan album though, I mean he's ahd five years to come up with 10 songs and some of them (3 or so) are pretty much filler, and they do go on a bit too long. "Nettie Moore" is wonderful as is "Workingman's Blues No2". 7/10 meethinks.
But I never really did get much beyond 1966/Hawks Dylan with the obvious one or two exceptions.

I thought you were talking about Al Stewart!

For me
“Think I’ll call him Cow….” Really said it all.
A pinnacle. Of sorts.
Cheers

I generally think a second rate Dylan is better than most performers. Tho with the previous 2 CDs sitting in my collection hardly being played, not sure I"m going to go get this new one. He does have a broad range of musical styles tho which I like and some fun inventive lyrics. A couple years ago I was driving home late and they had an early Dylan song on then played some young upstart who was just really horrible. I don't know what the DJ was thinking. Must have been asleep at the wheel.

Really beginning to sink in now. Spirit On The Water, Nettie Moore and Ain't Talkin' are the memorable tunes so far. Probably just a rizla off Love and Theft, but very, very good. Hope we get a chance to see him play these songs live next year.

I must admit that 'tangled up in blue' is a stormin track but never forget that the imho Dylan's best tracks are the ones he didnt put on his wowlbums. Try if you can to hear 'Blind Willie McTell' and 'Series of Dreams'..2 tracks which he left off his albums but which are staggeringly constructed.

Highway 61 revisted should be in every music lovers collection and not for the rather obvious choice of 'like a rolling stone' even though it changed rock and radio and popular music and stands the test of time like few records since but, buy the wowlbum for the epic, introspective , swirling, prophetic, fairy tale that is 'desolation row'! (plus the album contains 'ballad of a thin man')
And if you really want to embrace the zeitgist that is 'like a rolling stone' then i recommend the book "Like a rolling stone" by, imho, one of the most tuned in writers of our generation, Greil Marcus.
"Marcus seems to understand Dylan and the song intuitvely. His ideas burn with a fierce intelligence and the song takes on a new life in that cruicible." (c) Hanif Kureishi

As an ardent Dylan fan I have seen acts come and go who have been described as 'the new dylan'..trust me, there aint nothing wrong with the old dylan.
the best of the worst is conner oberst who sings with 'bright eyes'..check out 'i'm wide awake its morning'

This album is absolutely wonderful. I didn't have Naim when L&T and TOOM came out so didn't get them like I am getting this. I have now has a complaint from the Head of the Household as it has been on repeat all evening, so must reluctantly stop after this go around! I think "When the Levee Breaks" is a great song. Currently on track 3 "Rollin and Tumblin": great boogie and great new lyrics by his Bobness.

This just swings and the groove is deeper than the Mariana Trench. Well done Bob!

You might find it on his just released in the States 773 track box set - every album released including Modern Times is in the box plus 42 previously unreleased tracks - yours for a cent shy of US$200. (I'm sure I said this on another thread - sorry if I'm repeating myself!)
The new album has got off to a great start with me - the beat of track 2 got stuck in my head all day yesterday at work - could have been worse I suppose!

I see that HRH (His Royal Bobness) was on american radio the other day bemoaning cd sound quality!

He needs Naim!

Yeah for Bob. He has class, craft and artistry. He should get hooked up with some good analogue studio. I know there are a couple in LA. One article in the LA Times was about a local band that did a tour and the leaders found an old analogue studio for sale so they bought it and are trying to get new people to come in and try it out. Bob would certainly give them higher profile. I know Paul Simon does everything analogue he can. As well as Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones.

I had originally described the wowlbum as "Love and Theft Part II" which I notice a few members of the press have echoed!
However after a few dozen playing's I would like to change my description to "Not Dark Yet Part II".
NDY was, for me , a turning point in Dylan's songwriting-as has been pointed out, he couldnt and wouldnt have written NDY in the 60's, 70's or even the 80's. Modern Times continues this new Dylan, gone is the righteous accuser, replaced with the wily observer.
I still adore track 10-Aint Talkin

I'm going to have to get this, just curious as I think Dylan is great even if he's not up to par on all things. And you're right he is the wily observer now.

It's my first Bob Dylan album in my CD collection.
One thing I can tell you, it will not be my last one.
I really like this CD. It's been playing in my CD5i for a good 5 days now. Even my wife hasn't said anything, even after 5 days on repeat...no comments from her means a lot !!
Also, I have found that it'S well recorded and it's sounds so well on my NAIM'S equipment,
I'm a new dylan fan !
