DIY Soundbase type thing

Posted by: i am simon 2 on 15 January 2003

I have a Rega PLanet 2000 CDP, which I belive has squishy feet due to the PCBs being mounted rigedly.

In order to try to squeeze every once of potential out of it I think support needs to be considered.

It sits on top of a three legged Optimun glass and aluminim rack which is on spikes onto 1penny coins on the wood floor.

I have some sorbothane feet that I used to use under my old CDP, they are semi spherical bits of the stuff (I think they are called little feet).

These had a positive effect on my old CDP, but kill the 2000.

I read with interest varios DIY sondbase things, does anyone have any ideas for a cheap and easy solution.

Alan,

Where are those feet available from? Are they made of metal (they look like they are in the photo) or are they "tender"?!

Thanks,

Stephen.

I have started to fabricate.

Alan, i have used your idea to begin with, but have gone for a two tear design.

I have ordered some Tenderfeet and tendercups from Audiophilecandy (thanks for the tip Alex).

So far the first level will look very much like Alans, when the feet arive.

Then an other shelf with the centre cut out, like these bog seats we here so much about.

So far the bottom shelf has three short X head screws sunk into the top, in similar positions to Alans feet. The top level with the whole cut out, has three 25 mm screws that protrude from the bottom of it. These sit in the heads of the screws on the bottom shelf. CDP on the top shelf.

My other half thinks I am mad and she is upset about the mess.

First impressions are good, but the screw arrangment is to be repplaced with the cups and cones.

When the paint job looks respectible, I will post some picks.

Thanks for the input all.

Alex: thanks for the offer. I may well take you up on that in the near future, although I need to get some MDF first, which is unlikely to happen in the next couple of weeks. Might just buy some Tenderfeet though, as I'm quite surprised at how cheap they are.....we'll see

Simon: When I saw the Tendercups I started thinking along the lines you are. Make sure you report back and include pics!

All the best,

Stephen.

The tenderfeet/cups arrived yesterday and were put in place, I have not fixed them, only held in place by gravity but it seems to work well. Paint job is not finished as ran out of paint but here are some pics anyway.

looks very neat. How about an honest appraisal of the sound?

I have only had a chance to listen to the new shelf for about an hour.

The standard improvments for such a device seem to be present.

Lower noise floor, instruments seem to be surounded by much more space.

The most dramatic improment seems to be the bass.

Deep notes seem much cleaner and less one noteish, a slight problem with my speakers.

Flick by Lambchop has an almost eary ambiance which results from a much better spatial presentation of the bass guitar notes and drums (although I am not trying to sound too round earth).

Timing is perhaps improved, judging by my foot tapping to Billie Jean on Thriller.

I am thinking of a similar device for the pre amp, what do you guys think?

I will post more, once I have had a chance to listen some more.

Alan,

What racks are you using - any chance of a few more pics??

The rack is an optimum that I bought second hand from a friend, it is a three legged rack with glass shelves and aluminium posts, on spikes onto 1p pieces on the floor.

The CDP is on my DIY creation
