Quad Sound

I noticed a few zappa albums on ebay recorded in Quadraphnic sound.

Presumably this is four way sound, how could a needle with two planes hitting to sides of a groove produce sound to four speakers?

Each channel on the record has 2 channels FM multiplexed.
