Armageddon new style versus old?
Posted by: Top Cat on 18 June 2003
Hiya folks.
Now that I'm committing to LP12-dom once again I am looking very seriously at the Armageddon PSU to replace the valhalla PSU. The arm's an Aro so I'm thinking that it'd be a good match.
I see from the website that the Armageddon has had a facelift. Is that the only change over the older ones, or have other revisions been performed over its lifetime?
Lastly, if I buy an Armageddon, how much should I look to sell the Valhalla boards for? They're early nineties spec, seem to be in mint condition.

Saw them going at stupid e-bay prices of up to £100 last year.
Sold mine off pfm very quickly for £50.

Steve.

My dealer told me that Linn doesn't do the Valhalla any more. Which means that the Lingo is the cheapest Linn PSU for the LP12. If this is true I think it's stupid.
It would explain why second hand Valhalla's go heywire, pricewise.

I see no point in Linn persisting with Valhalla, but I'm slightly surprised they no longer list the Basik, which was like an Armageddon without the transformer, at least for 50Hz countries.

Paul,
Happen to agree that it's a shame they dropped the Basik. My first LP12 had a Basik PSU when I got it, there was something very retro about the large rocker switch...
Does anyone know whether the current Armageddon would suit my LP12/Aro better than the new Linn Lingo 2? My dealer was quite frank about how good the Armageddon was, but suggested it might not be quite as good as the new Lingo 2 - and so I have a dilemma. Kinda fancy an Armageddon, but my wife wants 45 replay ability - not that I'm fussed about that, personally, but it does influence things slightly...
I'd personally prefer to buy the Armageddon if someone does a dual pulley, i.e. a more advanced version of the same arrangement on my wife's old Linn Basik TT. Are these available and/or recommended? Again, not fussed about getting 100% sound quality with 45s - just something that works and won't detract from the 33 playback...

TC,
What prompted you to ditch your "plastic fantastic"?
Yes I too would recommend an Armegeddon vs. Lingo 2 demo. Both are highly capable and different enough to make your preferred choice highly obvious during the demo.

I'm embarrassed to admit I have ditched it because my wife hates using the parallel tracking tonearm that the deck is designed around. I love the sound, the fact that it tracks *everything* optimally, it's faster, quieter, more detailed, loads of positive things relative to my LP12. However, it's not really suitable for use with conventional arms and the next model up would have involved an outlay of some serious cash.
In a nutshell I still think the Evolution is the better deck - certainly quite a bit ahead of the LP12/Aro/Valhalla that I have bought (bit of a bargain there, absolutely mint 1990's spec, not a dent or ding anywhere, and no Cirkus bearing either). However, the LP12 is great, listening to an LP12 at home again is a little bit like putting on a comfy shoe - it may not be as precise and 'balanced' as a new shoe, but it feels good, right and you do become attached to it.

I don't know who could do this demo - perhaps Robert Ritchie in Montrose? - but I'd be well up for it. How much is a Lingo 2? I know an Armageddon is £775 and though I'd love to just buy one and get it over with (pref. s/h), this wife of mine wants 45 playback and I also would prefer not to buy a Lingo 1*
John
* Because I'd have then gone full-circle - LP12/Lingo/Aro -> Clearaudio -> LP12/Lingo/Aro - and I always felt that the original deck would have benefitted more from the Armageddon, though I hadn't done a direct comparison...

I think a Lingo costs about £850. A relative bargain....

45s with Armageddon
Yes it's possible: with e.g. a P300 Power Plant.
I tried it: it improves the overall performance quite obviously, and 45 works perfect. BUT don't use the P300 with any other Naim box than the Armageddon: it will totally destroy the sound! Though I have to admit that I didn't try a P600 with an XPS for example...

Getting back to the original topic. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the old and new geddon? Maybe someone from HQ can comment.

The LP12 might be flawed, but she's damn alluring
It's funny, but I'm sure Dev intimated the same sort of thing back when I went LP12->Clearaudio. Funny how far-sighted that was
Actually, to tell the truth if it wasn't for my nearest and dearest, I'd still be using the Clearaudio. I have to say, though, that it's great to have another LP12 - it's only a shame that I can't afford (nor justify) to keep both decks...

OK, can anyone from Naim comment as to (other than the fascia) whether any revisions to the Armageddon have been introduced?
I'm very much undecided right now, and there are no dealers in the country who can do the comparison, so every little shred of information I can get about either product would be very useful...

If the comments about the other bits of kit regarding the contribution of the new case, new power switch and new feet to improved sound quality apply then the answer must be yes. However what is the magnitude of this, is it grey to lavender, grey to black, hi to super?
We need to be told, where are you Richard? Our upgraditis addiction needs treating/feeding.

TC,
the new cases, feet & mains switches are claimed to make some improvement to the performance of the new kit.
These are the only changes on the Supercap, apparently.
cheers, Martin

Martin is correct here - improvements to the new Armageddon are mainly down to the new casework, feet, and power switch. Otherwise the internals are basically unchanged - I guess we got it right first time round!

Ta, Richard, for confirming that.
Quickie question: does the Armageddon come with any adaptor to allow 45rpm, or am I going to have to hunt around for the Linn adaptor (if it's still available)?
