Seems "the Internet" gets enough stick but there are a few good things out there - has anyone seen
Wikipedia?
Stumbled on it via a dashboard widget and it's basically an online, totally free, open source encyclopedia to which anyone can contribute.
I know you can just Google for most things but this did strike me as pretty bloody useful.

Yes, I think it's brilliant. I use it a lot since finding it searching for something on Google. I've found it particularly good for computer related subjects.
One interesting entry is "six degrees of separation".

Yes it is an excellent resource - one comment though: by having this type of format (anyone can contribute) it is not "referreed" content and thus the validity can not be fully ascertained. You would probably expect, however, that over time this does become normalised and valid.

The impression I get is that people watch their areas of specialty. I have come across a few entries that contained content that was tagged as being under dispute.
Also, having corrected a simple spelling mistake on one page, I noticed that it is necessary to make a comment on what has been changed and if information is added it needs to be validated. At least, that is my recollection.

I find it a good when used as a follow up to something found via google, it ios good for supplying an overview or first cut of a subject. If you are using the Mozilla Firefox browser then try using key word function:
quote:
Type "wp <something>" in the location bar to look up something in Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia.
PS You don't need the quotation marks.

I've used it every day for the last two years or so for my work. I agree it is an excellent resource. I would be tempted to always check important information elsewhere though due to the open nature of the content. Still surprisingly good and very diverse content.

Have you seen the entry for Naim?
Roughly translates as "mostly harmless".
