New 55x remote has arrived (along with 552)
Posted by: Graham Russell on 31 August 2007
I've just received a new 55x remote. I opened the box of my new 552 and there it was just lying there
New amp and new remote are warming up very nicely.
I'm also due another 55x remote to go with the 555 I received a couple of months ago.
I'm very much looking forward to the 552 running in over the next few weeks.
Happy days...
Graham.

Is this the new remote replacing the Flash? I guess the picture doesn't do justice to it as it looks pretty cheap! The picture Peter posted with the buttons illuminated looks better. The Flah had a screen, the new remote don't, then what's the advantage over the Narcom? As Adam hinted, the configuration of the five central buttons on the new Narcom 4 is a model of good intuitive design.

What is the thinking behind this, because it escapes me, frankly.
Because, with the absence of number keys, the PROG button would be a cul-de-sac.
And don't call me Frankly.

But I do need the keys with the CD

The Pathos set I was listening to, early this week, had a very easy to understand remote control:

so you took the plunge and got a 552 now Graham? is a speaker upgrade on the card? now a pair of ACTs would be very nice in your system!

Surely if the new remote doesn't give you all the buttons you require then stick with the existing Narcom.
I don't see the point complaining about the lack of certain buttons. The new remote is here, and it is what it is. No screen to chew batteries and a minimalist layout with the main functions.
My photos don't so it justice. It is machined from metal and feels very nice. If anyone is interested then the obvious thing to do it visit a dealer and have a play with one. Alternatively, buy a 552 or 555 and get one for free
I don't know if it offers a significant advantage over a Narcom. It is a cleaner and simpler layout. I do like the central volume up/down buttons.
Regardless of whether the remote is better or no better the 552 is sounding very nice - and that's the most important thing right now

Hi Darren,
The Arcs are still holding their own
ACTs would be far too big and far too much in my room. I tried Discoveries a while ago and they started to set off some unpleasant low-end boominess (if that is a real word).
I'm hoping to try a pair of Trinities at home when I get a chance. They could be very interesting!!!
A while ago I reported that a 552 I had on loan didn't offer a significant improvement over my 252 and that a 555 was a better option. After hearing the 552 at Chris Kelly's place recently I knew I had to get one. Obviously the demo unit I had was below par. I'm looking forward to the 552 improving over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the answers, folks.
BTW, out of the topic, but day 1 of my listening room upgrade was completed tonight, the kit is already hooked up and sounding not that bad at all in the new room. There's more air for the SBL to play with, and mainly more space to store up the music collection.
Pictures coming soon (after day 3).
Bye.

Couple of brief points as I'm just about to drive down south......
The ROHS legislation meant the Flash had to completely changed, so here was the chance to come up with something new, nice and a little smaller.
I only had chance to play with one briefly about a month ago when I took that picture, but I remember that by pressing and holding the bottom two buttons (I think
), the mode was changed, so no need for lot's of buttons! Hence probably much easier to use once you've had it a day or two.
By the way, my picture doesn't really do it justice, but it was the best I could do in the time available!
Must dash.
Peter

Interesting posts re the new zapper, but how do you get to the most important button on the preamp, aux2?

Just press the "nut" button - which appears to have been inserted back to front - giving "tun".
Posted on: 02 September 2007 by Rockhopper
Silly me. I thought tun on the new zapper was for tuner.
If you have the nat05 connected how do you get aux2 which is the normal vinyl button?
Looks like Flash 2 still has it's uses.

I've had a fondle, and it's a thing of elegant and tactile beauty. Much nicer to hold and operate than the cumbersome 'Flash' as far as I'm concerned, but of course it does less.
The lack of number buttons isn't a problem for me, as I often use 'Next' or 'Prev' with a loaded CD anyway.
Are buttons assignable? - I'd like 'Play and 'Stop' at the top. I can't find a manual on-line for it.
John.

Oh it's 'Tun' on the button. I thought it was 'Fun' and was really looking forward to pressing that one!

The 'TUN' button is in fact the supercharger, when you want to get up to 100dB+

James
PS Is the new lovely R-Com (which, at last, is a Naim r/c to have design values up there with the original 52/CDS r/c) compatible with olive gear, such as my 82 and CDS2?

Sounds like the new remote is much nicer in flesh than on a picture

Are you purchasing one John?

Yes.

Are we still talking about a remote control here?

I've lost track of all these remotes. I think the Narcom 4 is the one I have, though Adam talks about a 'central 5' buttons... this is in rows of four... I don't like it as much as the older one with the same layout, as the soft rubber keys aren't as positive as the older hard ones. Obviously remotes are very personal.
So the R-com has buttons for Pre and Tun, but not CD - does this mean, if Pre is selected, that the Next button will take you to the next input AND the next CD track? If so, why? If not, how do you get back to CD?
And $750 is a lot of cash in the US these days by all accounts....

I've had the pleasure of fondling the new R-Com and agree with J.N., it's a beautiful thing! I gleefully await the couple I'm due.
Personally, I'm very fond of my NARCOM AV remote that came with the AV2 and also controls preamp and CDP.
It's got green buttons for volume, white buttons for CD functions, black numerical buttons and a red button for standby (on the AV2).
Nice & logical layout and easy to see without having to put these blasted reading glasses on!
