Another year, another i-pod

New i-pods launched together with i-tunes 8 which adds an extra bit of cleverness. Pick a song from your library and it'll make up a compilation/playlist for you from your library based around the selected track (or from apple store if you wish). The new i-pods can do this too. Works quite well.

You need a new one every year because the battery fails at about that time.

I thought this sounded like a cool idea. Until it insisted on having a credit card number. I do not use the itunes store so they can , erm, go away.

So is mine - although I might change it for the 80 Gig model as my 30 Gig one is just about full.
Battery still lasts AGES (like over 10 hours I think)

My 3G from 200? is still running perfectly but I do have a 180GB one as I too had run out of space.
As for the "Genius" option in iTunes 8, I actually find it very useful for discovering new music. It is based on similar technology to that used by services like Pandora (US only now) and it's great for highlighting other artists. I don't buy the music from iTunes but I can go investigate the web sites of the artists and either buy music directly from them or buy the CD's from a locals record store.
Cheers

I have a 4th gen. on its first battery, and battery replacement is pretty easy.

I have a year old 160gb classic, batter lasts for days between charges, haven't noticed any decrease.
I'm not sure about the Genius stuff in iTunes - sounds an awful lot like an extension of the mini store which drew criticisms by sending information about your music library to apple (which I'm quite sure is none of their business).
regards, Tam

You don't have to turn it on. Yes it does end info to Apple but I don't really care if they know what music I have or not. I have already found some music that I hadn't heard previously so for me, I'm happy to take the recommendations they make. I won't be buying the music from Apple so it's a free service essentially.quote:I'm not sure about the Genius stuff in iTunes - sounds an awful lot like an extension of the mini store which drew criticisms by sending information about your music library to apple (which I'm quite sure is none of their business).

Those are fair points Jim. However, not everyone may want the info shared, and while you can turn it off, the mini-store was initially on by default and the fact that it was sending info was buried away in the terms and conditions somewhere.
