1985 - 1995

There is a rather big dip in my music collection between these years. Did anything happen in this period that makes it worth to try and catch up? As I only play vinyl this dip could also partly be the 'CD-gap', with vinyl catching up again around 95?
Happy listening!

The first four Orbital albums are also essential, right Jamie?
(Any Pink Floyd related album made after 1975 is of course absolute garbage, as any fule know.)
I edited it, it was rude, sorry.
The second to fifth Orbital albums are essential, the first is patchy. 'Brown Album'(1992), 'Snivilization'(1993), 'In Sides'(1996) and 'Middle of Nowhere'(1999) are excellent, so is the 'Times Fly EP'(1994) and 'Satan Live'(1996). The last two albums are poor.
What about 'Animals'(1977), my favourite Floyd album?
'Spirit of Eden' was an influence on Underworld, listen to 'Tongue' from 'Dubnobasswithmyheadman', it could easily be from the last two 'Talk Talk' albums. 'Second Toughest in the Infants'(1996) as you said is also great album.

The cover's nice, I spose. Bit depressing though.

Quite jolly when compared with 'The Wall'. I really do not like 'The Wall' though.
Also jollier than 'Spirit of Eden', but that is real good quality misery.
Worth persevering with 'Animals', not an immediate album, and yes quite dark, but has an slightly rougher edge than the earlier albums.

I too had a fallow period around this time (marriage, kids etc) took precedence over seeking out new music.
But, how about The Chameleons? Their second ("What Does Anything Mean? Basically") and third (the superb "Strange Times") albums were released in this period...

Not Underworld. It was Leftfield, OK, but as good as Underworld.
You are so right of course. I had both albums and mixed them up.
Dunno about Talk Talk

What about non-pop music like Jazz, Classical, Experimental?

Pearl Jam 'Vs' 1994
I would suggest this rather than 'Ten', the songs on 'Ten' are strong, but it is quite bluesy, 'Vs' is much harder and more of a grunge album. They might be too much at the commercial end of the grunge for some tastes though.
Vs is a great album

This is another superb album from the early 90's!
It's not rock-pop, but dance-rave genre i think.
Got my copy in 1994, and at this time i lent it to friends of mine who, like me, are not really into rave music, but we all loved this album.
An obsessive rhythm, worldly subject matter, interesting singing, and with humour.
Not for the faint-hearted! ; )

James, I would love the Ligeti-pieces! Stuff like this is so hard to find!
nymph, my wife has some T-GU on CD, wouldn't mind some on vinyl.

Willem,
I would recommend the Ligeti version by Aimard on Sony ... a super performance [I think it was recorded before the very last one or two etudes were written, so is not 100% complete] .. I have no idea if it is available on vinyl -- this is the CD version.

I'm busy categorising my collection. To add a record to my database I have to listen to it first (sick, I know!). Thusfar I've listened to about a third of my collection. Here are the albums from the 85-95 period that I've categorised already. Just to give you some idea.
Up till 1995 I had a little DUAL 505-111 turntable. In 95 I bought a Rega Planar 3 AND a Naim CD3. In 1997 I traded in the P3 for a LP12.
There was some sort of system in my record-buying: I tried to find some LP's that I mssed, I was looking for older (Jazz/Classical) albums and I tried to keep on listening to really new music on vinyl. I also sold quite a lot of records, especially seventies and eighties stuff.
So here is that list I promissed:
PAUL BLEY – TANGO PALACE 1985
LESTER BOWIE'S BRASS FANTASY – I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU 1985
THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN – PSYCHOCANDY 1985
SONIC YOUTH – BAD MOON RISING 1985
LAURIE ANDERSON – HOME OF THE BRAVE 1986
ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO – NAKED 1986
PAUL BLEY & JESPER LUNDGAARD – LIVE 1986
HALF MAN HALF BISCUIT – TRUMPTON RIOTS 1986
EUGENE CHADBOURNE – VERMIN OF THE BLUES 1987
MEAT PUPPETS – MIRAGE 1987
MEREDITH MONK – DO YOU BE 1987
PHAUSS – AUDIODROME 1987
SONIC YOUTH – SISTER 1987
NIKKI SUDDEN & ROWLAND S. HOWARD – KISS YOU KIDNAPPED CHARABANC 1987
NIKKI SUDDEN & THE JACOBITES – DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES 1987
VARIOUS ARTISTS – THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SUMMER OF LOVE 1987
THE HILLIARD ENSEMBLE – PEROTIN 1988
SOFT MACHINE – LIVE AT THE PROMS 1970 1988
SONIC YOUTH – DAYDREAM NATION 1988
THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN – AUTOMATIC 1989
ART ENSEMBLE OF SOWETO – WITH AMABUTHO 1990
THE FALL – EXTRICATE 1990
PSYCHIC TV – TOWARDS THEE INFINITE BEAT 1990
TELEVISION PERSONALITIES – PRIVILEGE 1990
MOE TUCKER – I SPENT A WEEK THERE THE OTHER NIGHT 1991
THE FALL – THE INFOTAINMENT SCAN 1993
RED SNAPPER – REELED AND SKINNED 1995
SONIC YOUTH – WASHING MACHINE 1995
VARIOUS ARTISTS – UNIVERSAL SOUNDS OF AMERICA 1995

In 94 the Kranky and Constellation record labels saved my life. Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Exhaust, Fly Pan Am, phew! Nowadays artists like Peter C. Yeh do the trick.

It's wonderful on vinyl tho more expensive. He really found a second wind of creativity late in life.
