How to connect CD player

Posted by: Keith Wu on 23 April 2001

I'm now a happy Naim owner. Yesterday I setup my first Naims, a used 72/140 combo. It sounds so great and I find it a definite upgrade from my old Arcam 290+290P. Being a newbie to both Naim and this forum, I need some advices on the way connecting my micromega CD player to the 72. Which is the the best way to go?

1) common RCA cable + RCA-BNC adaptor -> AUX BNC input on 72? User menu said that the AUX input is particular suitable for connecting the CD player!
2) DIN-RCA cable (e.g. Chord Cobra) -> Tape/Tuner input on 72?
3) RCA-BNC cable (exists?) -> AUX BNC input on 72?

Besides, there is already a MC s-board on the 72? Is it the best match with Benz Glider (0.9mV) on my Roksan Xerxes?

Thanks,
Keith

I started on the Naim ladder with a 72/140-beware it gets expensive from here!

I used Chord cobra cables to the phono stage via BNC interconnects rather than the standard DIN plug into CD input Naim advise, my dealer at the time suggested the phono stage was better 'quality' and it certainly seemed that way when I compared to a Naim interconnect via the DIN plug (which is of course not a straight comparison)!

The BNC plugs are not exactly expensive so you could have a listen before converting your Chord cables to the DIN plug.

It's best not to use adaptors. I would buy a Chord Chrysalis 2RCA-BNC (around £45 for 1m) or a Chord Solid2 2RCA-BNC (around £125 for 1m) and attach via the Aux input. I don't particularly rate the Cobra in a Naim environment.

Of course, if you're desperate to get going then adaptors will have to do!

Not sure about the S boards. 0.9mV is pretty high output - that's on the edge of being a high-output moving coil and therefore an MM requirement. Maybe Naim can help?

Frank.

Frank,

So you prefer using 2RCA-BNC to connect the CD player to the Aux BNC input instead of using the 2RCA-DIN to the tape/tuner DIN input?

I'm not sure about the usage of the word "particular" in the user menu. Does it mean Naim prefers using BNC to connect CD player rather than DIN?

Regards,
Keith

As I found out at the Bristol show, Naim's own cables are technically very similar to Chord Chrysalis so that would a good place to start. They are approx. £45 per metre and can be ordered from chords website
