CD ripping for dummies

Dear All,
CD ripping for Dummies
I'm hoping to get (and in the process provide for others) some answers to some fairly simple issues surrounding CD-ripping for dummies.
My aim is to rip all CDs (600+ but due to double) to a NAS drive (in my case a ReadyNAS duo with 2x 1.5TB drives) in lossless format. I then plan to (i) play via the NAS drive to my home hi-fi (including multi-room streaming) and (ii) continue to use iTunes to prime my iPod.
My PC will not have enough internal hard drive space to rip all my (present and future) CDs, hence the NAS.
So here are the questions:
1. Can I use iTunes to rip CDs straight lossless to my NAS drive? [If so, (i) how? and (ii) I assume the best lossless format would be ALAC but all comments appreciated.}
2. In reality, should I use alternative software (DBpoweramp/EAC/other?) to create the lossless database on the NAS drive? [If so: (i) why? and (ii) in what format should I rip in an ideal world (FLAC or other), assuming eventual playback via Sonos/Naim nvi/NAP200?]
3. Having created a lossless database on the NAS, how can I then best use iTunes to maintain a lossy database, so I can prime my iPod as now? Should I make 2 copies from the CD initially (one lossless to NAS and one lossy)? Or should I make a lossy copy from the lossless NAS copy?
4. Any pros and cons to having the lossy database on the PC (backed up to NAS) or only on the NAS? Will iTunes try and "copy" the lossless music back into its library, thus clogging up my PC's hard drive? [This latter question betrays my dummy status so please forgive.]
5. Any settings/pitfalls/tweaks I need to know about in order to then access the ReadyNAS via Sonos?
I recognise that this is all pretty simple for you guys out there but having reconciled myself to ripping many hundreds of CDs (mostly for the second time) over the next few weeks I don't want to make basic errors and have to start again.
Cheers!
