Nick Drake virgin

Someone played for me, Nick Drake singing Mack the Knife. HIs singing sounds a bit like Tom Waits, and I'm interested in checking him out.
I'm wondering what would be a good 1st album/cd to check out?
Thanks
Max

Hi Max
I know of no Nicj Drake recording of the Kurt Weill/Bertolt Brecht song Mac The Knife or of any example where Nick sounds like Tom Waits. Are you sure it was Nick Drake?
Nick was a good songwriter, good singer and a fantastic guitarist.
He only made three albums and they are all great. There are recordings of other-cuts available. If I could only have one then it would be his first Five Leaves Left.
However, Nick Cave recorded Mac The Knife on his album September Songs: The Music of Kurt Weill - and I wonder if that is the version you are thinking of. Sorry, I can't advise on Nick Cave as I've never heard any of his albums.

I'm sure it's Nick Cave you are thinking of. I'd try The Boatman's Call, for the softer side, or Let Love In for the noisier side. The latter includes my favourite Cave song; Red Right Hand. Murder Ballads is another great album, but not to be played with children present. And Kicking Against The Pricks is an excellent early album of cover versions.
But whether it's Cave or Drake, do try the latter. If three albums is too much, get Way to Blue; an excellent compilation.

I shudder to think of the effect on a poor sensitive soul, expecting to hear the pastoral musings of Nick Drake and being clobbered about the ears by the visceral Nick Cave instead.

From my POV I'd rather have Cave than Drake.

Ooooops. My bad.
It is Nick Cave. Thanks to everyone for responding. You guys are the best. I'm gonna check them both out.
Max
p.s. Don't worry Malky. Jedi's can take the punishment.
