Hello AlanK, and welcome to the forum.
I wouldn't worry about it my nait 5 does very similar things.
Although mine never makes any pops when i change the volume and i've never altered the balance, it does seem to pick up electrical 'rubbish'.
For example when my boiler turns on i get a pop from the speakers, also when i turn off the cheap lamp i've got in the same room it does the same.
Might be worth getting your dealer to look at it.
Is it new?
As for a static 'hiss' from your speakers this is also perfectly normal, but shouldn't be too loud.
I think i would be right in saying that this is the case with all of naims amps.
