Blu Ray 'Ghosting'
Posted by: David O'Higgins on 06 November 2008
I have just bought a Sony BDP S350 player. I have played a disc of 'Bullit' and also the first of the remastered 'Godfather' series. I notice that quite frequently there is a 'ghost' outline around faces, most notably around Robert Vaughan in 'Bullit'. Any advice?

Ghosting could be caused by any number of things!
Unlikely to be the player; can your display cope with with a 1080p signal? are you sending it through any sound or video processor? What cable & connections are you using?

Hmmm - I would suspect the HDMI cable first. Can you try an alternative or an alternative connection?

How long is the HDMI cable you are using? With short runs 1-3 meters, no brand cables are fine but with greater runs of cable u need to have something of higher quality.

Regular DVD's or Blu-Ray? Try googling for Edge Enhancement and see if it's that. Quite prevelent on normal DVDs and very annoying with a larger screen.

TV is a Sony 50" rear projection LCD, Full HD 1080p 60. Connection is HDMI and the discs are Blu Ray. The cable is 1 metre Monster. I will try another cable first and see if it makes any difference.

This Ghost effect is not present off other sources? Rear projection TVs are famous for creating all sorts of artifacts and errors.

No other source produces this effect.

Then Allan's suggestion as posted above is the probable cause.
Go into the player's menu & switch off any picture enhancement options that might be set on the player. You can also do this with the TV if you haven't already done so.
It's also worth noting that BluRay players and the like do take a couple of weeks or so to run in. Although I've never had gosting problems with them, I do notice a distinct improvement in picture quality after a while.

Tonym, you are right. Alan's suggestion hits the spot! At least now I understand what's happening but I suspect I won't be able to do much about it. I will investigate the manuals of both the TV and the Blu-Ray player, but if the EE has been put into the discc transfer itself, I'll just have to live with it.
Thanks to all.

Further tests suggest to me that the TV itself is at fault. There seems to be a problem with the HDMI inputs. If I call up a menu from the TV while using the blu ray player, the menu options themselves have 'shadows', whereas this does not apply when using the non HDMI inputs.
Anyone had this problem before?

Could this be a default setting particular to the HDMI input? I know I can "build" different profiles for every input on my TV.

Problem solved. Turns out that the TV required a software upgrade! Now working as it should. Thanks to all contributors.
