NAC 72 and Power Amp

Posted by: Scott Mckenzie on 24 May 2001

Current System:

Nait 3R
Arcam ALpha 7SE
Mordaunt Short MS814
Chord Co. Chrysalis
NACA5

I have been offered a very good, no excellent deal on the above (it currently includes a NAP140). My main problem is that although I know the price is fantastic (I wouldn't have to spend much more than I could sell my Nait for!!), is it going to be worthwhile in my system. I have been trying for ages to upgrade my speakers and CD player as I know they are both weak links but have been unable to afford it. I am tempted because I know that as my system grows the amps will show their quality more and more, but I feel that it may be a waste of time at the moment and I might be worth waiting until I have more funds (i.e. after uni.) and buying a much better sytem.

please help

it's the right thing.

A 72/140 is a splendid amp, and even at its price point when discontinued, nothing could touch it. It not only grooves like a nait3 but adds to its qualities in every way (drive, clarity, PRaT, coherence etc..).

If you were intending to stay with the Alpha7 forever, then upgrading may only be a way of creating an unbalanced system. However, if you are planning to upgrade in the end (what about vinyl?!?) then the 72/140 will be a more than worthwhile investment. Source first being that it is, you would have IMHO an amp that could undergo a huge number of changes before being outclassed - or even a logical place to put an "upgrade buck".

Having gone from a Nait 1 to a 62/160 while keeping my Alpha 7 (you have to take opportunities!), I'd go right ahead in your place. Overall, your system will benefit, and you'll be well placed to grab a CD3 or 3.5 when that presents itself!

You may miss the remote, but there'll be compensations.

Best;
