The Professionals

Posted by: acad tsunami on 09 May 2007

One of the highlights of my week was watching the gratuitous violence and chauvinism in the UK TV series 'The Professionals' which started way back in 1977 when I was a silly teenager. I have just bought the first series which contains 14 episodes for £14 from Borders - what a bargain! I thought I would have a good nostalgia fest and watched the first two episodes last night. It is fascinating to see some then unknown actors appear along side Bodie (who grew up into Judge John Deed)and Doyle (who didn't grow up at all)for example in the fist one I watched last night there was Pamela Anderson (who grew up to marry Billy Connelly)who gets slapped by Bodie and has her blouse ripped open and in the second edition there is a deadly International terrorist played by er ....'Trigger' from 'Only Fools and Horses'!!

The writing is dire, the plots are laughable, and the acting is a joke. They are full of mistakes (the terrorist fires 3 rounds at Cowley the head of CI5 we see the 3 rounds hit a door in less than a second - achieving a 3 inch group at a 100 metres - with a bolt action rifle - yeah right!!)The real SAS must have been livid at how they are portrayed. So total dross then and I can't wait to see the rest. Winker Is this a mid-life crises?

Of course I preferred Danger Man and The Prisoner to any of these series.

The Saint was pretty good too - anybody remember George Sanders as Simon Templar?

Dear ROTF,

I remember the Saint [Simon Templar] with his little sporty Volvo on black and white telly! I have no idea who the actors were! I used to enjoy it immensely on the rare occasions we were farmed [my brother and I not the "Royal We!"] for baby-sitting purposes at a friends house and we were allowed to watch it, sometime after the early evening news! at home we would have beenin bed by six!

Tell me telly has improved! You will not be able hear me laugh, but I think you can imagine that I shall be. I got shot of the telly in 2003!

Kindest regards from Fredrik

Learn to read!

thank you for your well-mannered and openly diplomatic post.
I had missed the crucial point (which you have generously furnished in repetition) in your original post. It's not so much that I need to learn to read; I need to develop the patience to read *every* word in your output, in particular. I am sure you will not be surprised to note that folk aren't hanging on your every word, and write accordingly.

At any rate, we share a great dislike of this dreadful tv series. Well, at least you do. I like it very much. I do trust that makes as little sense as was intended.

now, off to your SD1 recliner to watch another episode in Cowley-esque fashion.

regards

Dear Fredrik

The early TV series had Roger Moore as Simon Templar

Apparently, Volvo supplied the The Saint with five P1800 models. The first one in 1962, registered as 71 DXC (in the series the number was ST 1). In 1964, after Volvo moved P1800 production from England to Sweden, they sent a 1800S (77 GYL) to the programme and 71 DXC was broken apart for interior shots. In 1967, Volvo supplied another car, but it was wrecked in a crash. So Volvo supplied two more cars: NUV 647E for Roger Moore's personal use and NUV 648E for The Saint.

Before the charm of Roger Moore (I really liked the series), George Sanders played a much more sinister Saint. Sanders first showed up in The Saint Strikes Back (1939) from Leslie Charteris's Saint Meets His Match and did four more films: The Saint in London (1939) from The Million Pound Day (The Saint versus Scotland Yard}, The Saint's Double Trouble (1939), The Saint Takes Over (1940), The Saint in Palm Springs (1940) - Chateris had nothing to do with the last three and said he didn't like them.

The first Saint film was The Saint in New York based on Charteris's novel of the same name and made in 1938 with Louis Howard playing Simon Templar, but I've never seen that film. Hugh Sinclair took over from George Sanders in the next two films The Saint's Vacation (1940) and The Saint Meets The Tiger (1943) both based on Chateris novels. Louis Howard made a comeback in The Saint's Girl Friday (1953). There are also some French films Le Saint I suppose, but I've never seen them and know nothing about them. The next outing for Templar was the TV series.

Yes, that was an excellent series, with both lead actors in their prime, and striking well off each other, it must have been a lot of fun to make.

Does anyone remember an ealy evening B&W detective series that had the wonderful Mia Zetterling as the secretary/man friday ?

Any one remember Crane starring Patrick Allen and :-

Laya Raki 38-23-36 apparently. She is 80 in July

Seem to remember she left an indelible mark at the time (1963).

Interpol Calling sounds integuing, but I'm sure she was a regular in a series and not a just a one off appearance.

Rico,

I am greatly enjoying my nostalgic 'Cowley, Bodie and Doyle' fest but I am a tad embarrassed to admit it. I would not defend my taste in 'The Professionals' for a second. It is dross but I love it! Smile - I can't say I like that you enjoy them too as I think we should both know better. Winker - The professionals - a guilty pleasure!

Dear ROTF,

Thank you so mmuch for your post. I wonder if the Roger Moore Saint will come out on DVD. Somehow it was the most grown up TV I was allowed to watch as a child, except the usual film on Sunday afternoon!

And I want to get e P1800! About the only obvious replacement for my ancient 240 that there is!

According to a TV car show, Fifth Gear perhaps, a couple of weeks ago you can get a minter for about 5 grand!

Dear Bob,

It would suit me. Small, very simple [coil ignition and contacts and a proper carb], and sporty enough to be fun without being very fast!

Plus Volvo strength, safety and reliability. Perfick!

Dear Fredrik

Please click here for The Saint DVDs. I bought the complete first series as a present for my mother who is a big fan too - I've watched most of them and they are excellent.

Dear ROTF,

Thanks, big thanks again! Soon I shall be entering my second childhood!

I got some lovely CDs as a gift today as well, so have a peep in the Music Room later. One of them is simply amazing to a degree no at all expected! Beethoven's Patoral, but I want to write nicely and at some length about it. A revelation: Klemperer with the VSO on Vox. Not quite typical of what Otto K's legend might lead many to expect. Stupendous...
