Nait 3 and 3R
Posted by: kinetic on 23 June 2003
Hi guys
I'm thinking of starting on a Naim path, with the entry level of Nait 3 or 3R in mind. Would appreciate any advice and things to watch out for on getting it as a used item (besides checking the serial number for year of product). And is there any other difference between the 3 and the 3R besides the remote control?
Appreciate your help.

Welcome to the forum.
If you are not used to Naim products, my advice is to buy it from an autorized Naim dealer, unless you get a very good deal.
Nait3 and 3R are the same inside (except the remote circuits).
If you buy one, you will anyway have to go to a dealer to buy Naim speaker cable (NACA5, mandatory with a Naim amp) and probably RCA to Din interconnects. So start here and ask for a package deal with a waranty. It can be the start of a long relationship.
If you tell us where you live, members will tell you where to go.

Hi Kinetic. I'm not 100% sure but I believe that the 3 and the 3R are not exactly the same. Apart from being remotecontrolled I have read that also the preampstage is improved on the 3R. I'm pretty sure about this but an e-mail to Naim can clear it out.
I have lived many years with the 3R. It would be good to know what source(s) you are using. My experience with the amp is that it can be rather fussy about the quality of the source. You need a good source(s), a good turntable or a CDplayer that is not bright sounding. From the beginning Cd replay was not to good using an Arcam Delta270. It was a bit bright and thin, adding a flatcap (some "surgery" is needed) improved it a lot. A hicap made it even better. I'm quite satisfied with the amp, it plays very dynamic, much more than its power rating suggests, as long as you use reasonably efficient loudspeakers. So it's easier to help if we know what CDplayer or turntable you are using.

good idea Kinetic!
i start with a nait3 and i was very surprise with the dramatic and easy sound flow and i was using the tiny proac 1s (84/85 db) they sound more live then my previus Teac/thule audio 100 + 100 watts!!
All without naca5 & Co. later i upgrade with a hicap, then nap 140 and nac 72 (were i ear the improvment of hicap) and of course naca 5.
bye
