A better question is to ask is "Are you planning to do anything significant about climate change?". There are very few meaningful options available to most of us.

Me too. Kids in my life, but they're not mine. My DNA stops here.

Switching off lights is a waste of time, most bulbs are low wattage.

If you really want to lower your electricity consumption, swith off the air conditioning.

Use fans instead as they use a fraction of the power.

Can anyone tell me if this is true?

I had the impression that with new eco bulbs it can be more efficient to leave them on than switch them repeatedly on and off as this causes a surge of power to 'start' them each time.

Did I get hold of a modern myth?

Bruce

PS Childless here too. Perhaps those green lights on the front of Naim kit make you sterile. I think we should be told!

It's a myth in that sense. It's not in the sense that it lowers the life of the bulb, new ones has to be manufactured which uses energy and they has to be transported which uses energy, etc, etc. There is of course a breakpoint where leaving it on will use up more total energy.

BUT! Remember, the heat from the bulb (all the energy put into the bulb will eventually be turned into heat) will help to warm your house, you will use less energy in the heating system to reach the same indoor temperature. Not much of a waste there.

And a final tip to you Britts on how to save on the heating bill. Better insulation of the house. Cheapest in the long run.

Not many UK homes have air-conditioning so switching it off could be difficult.
