Remote extenders?
Posted by: blythe on 19 May 2003
I have a NAP140 powering extra speakers in my study, dining room & hall and want to be able to control the pre-amp (sited in the drawing room) from the study.
The study is about 60 feet away from the pre-amp and a "Powermid" simply doesn't operate the distance.
Has anyone any ideas as to what I should try or do??
Thanks :-)
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Although I haven't seen one for a while, there was a system that operated using a wire. you could follow your LL signal cable path with this too I guess.
I must mention that the only reason I haven't seen one is possibly because I haven't seen a remote extender in a few years - bought my parent's one a while back but I don't think that archaic beast is available anymore. looked like a couple of pyramids.
Give maplin (.co.uk) a go. Although they're selling a lot of junk these days, they do have the better crop of accessories compared to dixons and the like. I will have a look tomorrow afternoon. It'll be a nice walk down oxford road. It'll be full of stressed students! Fun!

Blythe,
How have you attached the NAP 140 to the preamp? Didn't think Snaic cables went to 60ft.
Cheers, Jens

Oldie: Walking is my only current option, however, it can take 3-4 trips to get the volume just right.
Also, when the 'phone rings, by the time I've walked to the sitting room and back to the study, they've usually rung off!

I shall try maplin.co.uk - I've tried the Niles link but it's not working at the moment....
My 140 is sitting on the shelf beneath the pre-amp - the speaker leads are 60 feet long :-)
(Thank goodness it's not my main system!)

I use 'Powermid's - do a search on google.
Works well.

Mr Underhill,
May I, with respect, suggest you read my original post?

Alan:
Thanks for the info on Xantech, however, i can't see anywhere that mentions the transmission rage - it only seems to mention reception range, which I guess is the distance between the remote and the transmitter?
Also, where would stock this range of stuff in the UK? Obviously not Dixons ;-)

Whoops!
Although I am using one over that distance!

I take it then, that the remote part (the part I will have in my study) will have to be wired back to the hi fi?
This is really what I'm trying to avoid. Carpets would need to come up in the study, dining room, hall and drawing room in order to do this - along with several huge pieces of furniture and great expense.
If I can buy a "Super Powermid" (Mr Underhill :-)) that would be a better bet.
OR: Does anyone know if I can have a Powermid set-up from Study to Dining room, with ANOTHER set from Dining Room to Drawing room. Like a relay idea..... Do you think that'd work?
I'll look at the link in a minute than you Alan.

Where in the UK you get Xantech I'm not to sure. As for transmission distance, I have run them 50m plus with no problems. You use cat5 cable between the hidden link & the connecting block with the connecting block placed behind your Hi-Fi, the emitters are then placed on the front close to the IR receiver within your unit.
