Legal music downloads?

Posted by: Paul Hutchings on 16 December 2005

Ok so there's the iTunes music store, but I begrudge paying a quid less for an album than I would for a physical CD.

Where else is there?

The only other place I've really heard much about if allofmp3.com.

It's Russian, and possibly wrongly that puts me off a little bit - has anyone used them?

This page used to be loaded with goodies, but when folks started selling the tracks on Evil Bay the guys withdrew most them - there are still a few and they are free.

Paul it is time for you to focus.

Do you want break the law?

Or do you want to use iTunes or similar?

That fact is this, the music industry is putting heavy pressure on iTunes and Apple because they feel 70p per tune is to cheap.

Get a grip me old mukka, steal music or pay up the choice is clear, (Or not so clear at all)

I think iTunes is a rip off. I resent paying £8 for a download of an album when I can walk into Tesco and get the physical item for £9. Better yet I can sometimes get the CD posted to me from the US for less than the cost of a download from the US.

Having had a quick nose around it seems Napster, HMV, and Virgin all offer monthly subscription services, haven't looked into them in great depth, because of the wonders of DRM they're all tied into Windows and Windows Media Player - we cannot be trusted with mp3 files after all.

The question about allofmp3.com remains though, they might be cheap, that might be because Russian law is out of date, but that doesn't necessarily make them illegal - or does it? Smile

Yes it is illegal, unless you live in Russia!

I agree that itunes is a rip off, but 500m people can't be wrong.

The trouble with subscription is the fact all the music choice is cerrraappppp

You want bittorrent or similar find it on macupdate.com

I suspect 500m people don't know any better because it looks pretty and is easy to use.

I don't like bittorrent, I don't consider myself overly paranoid but there are too many stories about people getting letters from their ISPs, who in turn have had letters from the recording industry over relatively small amounts of downloading, so if I go down that route I shall stick to Usenet.

It will be interesting to see how these subscription services take off. I read somewhere the average Briton purchases 3.2 CDs a year, so it doesn't seem rocket science to work out that if some of these signed up to a subscription "all you can eat" music service at a tenner a month it would generate more money than is spent on CDs in the shops - am I missing something?

I know someone who uses it extensively and claims it is brilliant, good quality downloads, no problems with the payment process, and an ever increasing catalogue.

I would be happy to use the russian site but it always says they are having trouble with PayPal. I suspect that paypal have been told not to work with them.

I am not prepared to give my card details. I would be happy to use paypal.

I've been using allofmp3.com, mainly to download digital copies of things I already have on vinyl. The legality does appear somewhat grey, however the selection/download/payment process works well.
