In Teen Music Choices, Anxiety Rules

From Scientific American

In 2009, Miley Cyrus reportedly made an astonishing 25 million dollars. Most of that money came from album sales, which were reported to be slightly over 4 million during that year. Four million…Four million?! Have you heard Miley Cyrus sing? Are there really four million kids out there willing to spend their hard-earned babysitting money on a Miley Cyrus album because they deeply love listening to her sing? Well, according to the findings of a study recently published in Neuroimage, selling four million albums does not translate to having four million people like your music. The study reports that there is good reason to believe that a lot of those purchases were made out of fear -- a fear well known to adolescents all over America: terror of social rejection.

I'd be frightened to buy the wretched thing...

At work she's known as Smiling Virus.

I've never heard of her. The article highlights what we have always known - children buy music to be part of the herd. We see this in films such as Twilight - how else to explain the success of that truly dreadful movie. I also note that many teens have 2,000 plus Facebook friends and that those teens with only 50 (a not unreasonable number)Facebook friends get laughed at. Sad.

I often wondered about how the (mainly younger) relatives of mine had 500+ "friends" on Facebook ....it seems that when they add a friend from school or college they simply ask everyone that friend knows to also be their friend (even though they have never heard of the vast majority of them!) even if some don't agree enough do to bump up their "friends" list! ....sad really

I think going to the bother of thinking up a nickname for her is far sadder than actually liking her.

Yes I did. My wife had heard it was good and pestered me to watch it. 'Let the Right One in' on the other hand is a very good Swedish film about a female teenage vampire.

Very easy... it is a classic story of unrequited love. These stories have been popular for hundreds of years.

Also, in case you are unaware, the novels came first. My partner, who isn't a teenager, has read them all (and generally doesn't read that much).

I've sat through two of the films with her and completely understand why they are so successful.

Adults have the need to belong to herds too. Religion, sport, fora...

I work on the outer fringes of the music industry. It comes with the turf...

Fair enough. In my office we have no need to refer to her either directly or indirectly.

Why she? In any case.
