Where's the best place to check if something's released on vinyl?

Take Lemon Jelly, for example, I had no idea this was on vinyl so I bought the CD. Bollocks.

I would also like to know if there's a relatively complete list of new vinyl releases.

Currently, I have two very clunky methods.

-Seeing if there's a vinyl option of the desired album at CDnow.com

-Going to the store and checking.

Thanks for the Diverse Vinyl link, it looks such a very easy place to spend loads of cash.

There is no place to officially check!

You must go to the record stores and look. I own less than 20 CDs and absolutely abhore CDs. I own thousands of records and am always finding new and used albums on vinyl which supposedly don't exist. Sometimes I even go to my favorite shops and ask if ***** is out on vinyl; they'll look it up and tell me no, then I'll find it in stock a few moments later!!

Here are a few tips:
First, never listen to clerks with lip rings, mascara, or green hair; they only play CDs at home. They don't get it even though they'll tell you to your face that you're the long-haired, out-of-touch hippy, stuck in the 70s (at least that's what they say to me) who doesn't get it.

Find out who at the record shop actually plays and loves vinyl and ask them. Unfortunately if only one copy of something comes in, you know who's getting it.

Vinyl is sometimes pressed in such small numbers that shops are only allotted one or two copies. That means get there the day it's released.

Often a good shop will carry imports. This means that perhaps a Hungarian, Canadian, British (in my case), etc. vinyl version is available which is not listed in mags or the internet.

Promos: I have a large portion of my collection on "Demonstration Only; Not For Re-Sale". These records are often the best sounding as they haven't been shrink-wrapped meaning no static and no warping. At the record shop on the day of release, check the used bins as well!!!! Promo records are often limited production which means no over-use of pressing plates.

I am a huge Zappa and Hendrix fan and even though both "official" sites say there is no new vinyl, I own it all.

FWIW, from about 1990 to 1995, I had a harder time finding stuff, but there is such a plethora now, I can't even keep up.

BTW, for you CD heads out there, I have only come across four or five records in 20 years which actually cost more than the CD version. Vinyl is still cheaper.

Laser-Freak,
It comes and gos. MSN (my ISP/host) just came out with some new software which was supposed to improve everything/make it faster. I now have faster access but my site sometimes disappears. Try it again. I'll be putting more photos up soon when it reappears!

Ron The Mon,

I liked your post.

So did I. And you're right.

Taking Diverse as an example - good catalogue - no mention of Lemon Jelly though.

You seem to have better record shops than we do.

BTW I've got a few Russian Floyd and Stones pressings - awesomely bad quality packaging but the vinyl's not too bad now and then.

Now now Alex for someone that lives in the centre of London saying that ron has the best record shops may be construed as crap.

Even humble Vigin mega stores carry a small amount of vinyl and usualy very recent stuff. Of note recently Boards of Canada, Lamb Chop etc.

How often do you go to Virgin Megastores - you could buy all their new vinyl each month and still feel short changed. Tower are marginally better but nothing like the choice Ron gets, judging from his post. Selectadisc carry a fair vinyl stock but they waste far too much of their shop space with the kind of Jazz that 1st Pentacostal buys (and I don't).

Alex. I bought Lemon Jelly on Vinyl this weekend.

I don't know what possessed me to do so as I didn't really like the last one they did.

However I am prepared to strike some sort of deal for your CD version.

Thing is CD was 11.99 and record 19.99

So any deals you can think of, up to you. email me.

Alex not that the offer of cleaning a peice of vinyl for me has been taken lightly, I have pulled out of the non agreed deal.

Listening now at volume I believe I may grow to like it.

Also I can use my record cleaner for cleaning records, you tight git. razz

Gary,

You seem to have underestimated the value of my advice.

Also, you may be one of the very first given the opportunity to buy 'Count (the 'o' is often silent) Shuvalov's "It's a Bloody Miracle" Supertastic Snake Oil'. Solves all your hi-fi needs - anti static, record cleaning, shitaki stone aligner, etc, etc, for the miraculous price of £39.99 for ten drops (P&P extra).

BTW - Have you preordered the PT Coma Divine vinyl re-release - its only 35 quid.

Erm, no I havn't preordered any PT, I have made it my policy.
