Speaker and electronics placements

Posted by: Justin on 14 July 2001

My room dimensions and layout dictate one of two positions for my electronics and TT. The easy position will me right next to one of the SBL's. The other is along one of the side-walls, but in that case the speaker cbales must be routed under the floor and back over to the speakers. So position #1 next to the speaker is preferable.

I have a short rack (knee high or so with only two shelves). My rega sits on top of the top shelf.

My concern is that having the TT so close to the load box of the SBl is a bad idea. Anybody else required to keep the TT so close to a speaker? The top of the TT is lower than the top of the bottom loan box of the sbl's.

Thanks
Judd

There's only one way to find out if your TT being too close to one of the speakers will cause problems, noticeably a low-frequency booming noise, and that is to try it and see. The speakers are themselves isolated from the floor with spikes, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'd also be concerned about having the TT on the same rack as the other electronics - a humming/buzzing noise will be heard through the speakers as the vibration of transformers in the amp especially, is picked up by the TT cartridge through the plinth and arm, and transmitted back into the amp. You either need some very good isolation for the TT, or put it on a wallshelf. Rega make one which sells in the UK for 38 GBP, which works well with my P25. Alternatively you could look at something more expensive from Mana! The wallshelf option further decouples the TT from the floor.

It's always a nice day for it, have a good one wink
