Although (not suprisingly!) biased towards USB - this is a very good guide to computer audio and well worth a read for those embarking on the long journey to enlightenment

I think the serve will do as an HDX and get info via the internet without prompt. It also has a tag editor where you can title as you like and if for instance you convert LPs to .wav etc. or just want to retitle the same track from different sources or bit rates.

Thanks for that info.
Just to clarify, since I have actualy seen an HDX at work on this.
When adding my NAS, with all my currently ripped CD and downloaded HiRes music on it, as a Network Share to the HDX/UnitiServe, the HDX will try to lookup all the music on the internet and build its database with metadata from there?
If that is so, how will it be able to know what music and albums it has to look for?
Will it use the tags on the files (all my albums are ripped to single tracks) or will it use the information from the directory structure like artis and album name?
This is what I would like know because it determines how I need to setup/convert my NAS music-directory or file-tagging. And as you can understand I wouldn't fancy to have to rerip all my music again to have the HDX rebuild its metadata.
Cheers

I haven't tried but I believe that Foobar also supports AIFF tags. I do prefer the Itunes or MM interfaces. MM is still an option as it does WAV. get the sse2 ASIO plugin and try the buffer at 8 to start and whatever the top priority is. http://otachan.com/out_asio%28x64%29.html There's another for 64 bit. default everything to not xfade, gap, convert etc. If you want a kernel stream ap you can usually use anything that works in Winamp. MM is basically a shell for Winamp. If your later than XP all bets are off and WASAPI exclusive should be tried. Have fun and good luck.quote:Originally posted by gypsykirk:
Yeah, i've itunes set up properly, as good as it gets, eq off, volume up, sound check, enhancer crossfade off......
i just thought the drivers didn't work with pc cos there was no setup in dcs guide and only for mac.
tbh, I think all logical reasoning is beginning to suggest to me to keep my archival in flac, delete my wav and make aiff from flac then import to itunes....and be done with it!!! lol

I suspect it uses both depending on need but I really don't know. Perhaps a tech could add here.quote:Originally posted by Aleg:quote:Originally posted by js:

Just to clarify a typo here:
I have not actualy seen an HDX at work on this.
Otherwise I would be able to know.

quote:I would find a dedicated ASIO driver and stay away from ASIO4all which is basically a modified kernel streamer. I think the program specific kernel streamers better. Dedicated ASIO vs dedicated kernel will be close and dependant on program and setup. This is all for XP
js....what would you recommend ? I'm sorry, this is all VERY new to me and the only reason i have asio4all is i followed the step by step dcs guide.
I am running windows XP.
Although i am looking at that dell zino, with windows 7 as a cheap solution to a dedicated server,(also based on dcs guide) the fact it has no optical out (to my knowledge) doesn't bother me so much as in, if i can stream studio master over USB,to my vdac, then i've no requirement for optical at this stage, ££££'s...ndac!
Cheers.
P.S, maybe to highlight, up until reading the guide, i had no real idea what these drivers were all about, although i'd seen them mentioned all over the place. I'm not really sure what kernel is? etc but am happy to try different options with my current setup.
Cheers.
