Valhalla DIY Repair???

Posted by: vicdiaz on 04 July 2002

Hi,

After a few years without using my LP12, I finally upgraded it with both the Cirkus and Trampolinn upgrades, besides getting a Linn-rebuilt Karma.

While installing the upgrades I noticed that the ceramic casing of R33 on the Valhalla was cracked, but the LP12 still powered on. Later, after setting up the LP12 for testing, I noticed that the platter wobbled for more than 2-3 minutes after power on and the speed/pitch of the music was not correct.

Brought the LP12 back to the setup gig (Linn dealer loaned it to me) and started measuring voltages on the motor connectors. As soon as I connected the LP12 to the mains and powerd it on the voltages were:

Blue 61.5-63.4 volts (varied rapidly)
Red 62.7-63.1 (steadier)

After maybe 20 minutes the voltages increased to the following:

Blue 72.3-73.4 volts
Red 79.1 79.8 volts

Any recommendations on how to fix it?? Anyone knows the value for R33??

I'm planning on replacing the 3 blue electrolytics sometime tomorrow night, but it wolud be great to know the value for R33 and replace it at the same time.

Whats the trimpot on the Valhalla for???

Well,

Finally I figured out the resistor value (around 174Kohm) and replaced the tree 47uf caps with 33uf caps (as seen on other post).

The output is now 92.1 and 87.8 volts and it's working like a charm!!!

Thanks for answering your own question. BTW, did you find out what the trim pot's for?

I've been surprised that there hasn't been many Puerto Ricans on this forum as there are a lot of Linn/Rega/Naim users there. Are you the guy that once gave me the tip how to glue the pulley back on Regas that had speed instability? I heard you did several of those mods a week.

Just Wondering,

Hi,

Well, I performed those Rega mods more than 15 years ago (when I worked with the local Rega/Linn dealer). Since this was my first post in this web site, I don't think I was the one that suggested it (maybe someone mentioned my name).

I'll try to get the word spread around regarding this web site because there is so much stuff you can get from it (and post it too!!!).

It's true, there are lots of Naim/Linn users in Puerto Rico, but since I've been mostly retired since I got married (12), I'm just starting my comeback on vinyl!!!
