Recently won an eBay auction for $3000+ bit of kit. I would like to escrow to at least check it works! The vendor wants paypal only. Have I any security that I will get my money back after it is sent to paypal if kit doesn't arrive?

In short NO.... it wont give you the level of protection you are looking for
Depending on the seller status i think there is a paypal protection scheme for buyers, but i believe there is a limit of either £250 or £500.

Might offer to drive/fly down to Melbourne to listen and pay in cash and collect. See if he runs a mile (or Km if you are here)
