Drum & Bass, In you face

Posted by: garyi on 03 May 2002

OK, heres the way it is. Once upon a time I had a very narrow minded view on music, if it wasn't done by a 'proper' band with 'proper' instruments then I was having none of it. crap I would say, Crap.

Well since the introduction of SBLs, then a better pre/power and of course a whole lot of growing up by my self I am getting into a lot of stuff.

It would appear that I really like electronica etc, but that has been covered very well in other threads.

Less so and perhaps because I am alone on this forum in my taste for Drum & Bass.

I am on the lookout for some good stuff in this vein, I don't like house, neither Techno which does me head in.

Drum & Bass is my thing.

Now I have bleated on about the virtues of Good Looking Records, LTG Bukens Label, and indeed have lots of vinyl from there.

But there are other labels, other stuff, can anyone recommend any for me to purse with vigor?

One thing I will admit too, if you ain't carefull a lot of this stuff can sound samey, so I am looking for stuff which really stands out not only in terms of the art, but also the recording quality. Alas some of the good looking stuff is let down on the latter.

cheers folks, have a very nice weekend.

Well yes I think I do!

You need to have the following in your collection, they are avilable at amazon, however there is about a two week wait for them.

Big Bud: Infinity Infinity
Big Bud: Late Night Blues
LTJ Bukem: Logical Progression, (a little harder this one)

All are on LTJs, Label, Good Looking.

Also look out for a five peice vinyl set called Earth, its limitied addition of 5000 but is really good.

I have Goldies Timeless album, which is very good however I got some one of the mother albums on vinyl at its total crap, it should be called Drum, because there certainly ain't no bass!

Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Grooverrider - Mysteries of Funk
  • Roni Size - New Forms
  • Goldie - INCredible Sound of Drum'n'Bass
  • Talvin Singh - OK (with lots of tabla)
  • µ-Ziq (pronounced "mu-sic") - Lunatic Harness
  • Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album

BTW, if you like the bass part, definitely check out Talvin Singh's stuff.

Cheers Mike, for what ever reason I didn't have you down as the D&B type!

will check them out.

Is the goldie one any good, please say no because I passed it by on vinyl for 10 quid the other day.

Are you talking INCredible Sound of Drum'n'Bass? Yes, it's great. It's actually a remix of a bunch of other people's stuff (including Rainbows of Color off of Grooverider's Mysteries of Funk).

OK, I am working on it.

Unfortunately, I got side tracked by yet another second hand record store today. Watford it appears is full of um, if you look carefully.

Got a nice condition possibly original Ummagumma.

A focus record, (utter cak)
Rattle and Hum, in excellent condition.
Van morrision, Hard nose the highway.
Yes Going for the one
Ry Cooder Bop Till You drop

25 quid the lot, god I love this format.

Most of the stuff om this thread appears to be the tame son of proper D+B, Jazz'n'bass.

For the real deal, check the following

Ed Rush & Nico, Ed Rush * Optical, Ed Rush & Fierce, Dom & Roland, Ryme Tyme, Technical Itch, Bad Company, Alpha Omega, Future Forces Inc, DJ Scott (not the hardcore tunes though), Matrix, Panacea, Steel, Krust, Lemon D, Dillinja etc. etc.

These fine artists have produced quality music without the need for fripperies such as vocals, melodies or harmonies.

Yes having been the harbour of this thread I feel inclined to add a few rules.

Some drum and bass for me sounds like a drum kit that has been thrown down some stairs, that for me is where it goes wrong.

I seem to be in the drum and bass situ where there is some phat bass, the kind that makes you truely worried you are pissing the neighbours off. some drum and bass seems to be more concerened with the drums side, and in general not the bass drum, if you know what I mean.

So mabye an emphasis of artists and labels which are produce that kind of of gut exploding bass, you know what I mean!

The Van Morrison I got this weekend is really nice BTW, very emotional, a good buy.

Check out some of Bristols finest at:
http://www.fullcycle.co.uk/pages/frameset.html

Mice fed amphetamines? Maybe. I don't care. Roni size, Krust, DIE, SUV etc. kick ass stuff. Not for weenies are people with intolerant neighbours.

For the fans of Mu-ziq, a must have is Tango n vectif.

On the Jazzier side, 'In order to dance' session 1 drum and bass is a great compilation on R&S records.

Agreed on Bukem, even for a neophyte like me. I know that I've mentioned him before on other threads ('cept I accidentally called him "ITJ" Bukem). I have "Producer" and "Journey Inwards" and they're both excellent sets. Any other recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I don't believe you two have read the thread, I started off with Bukem and his various record labels, Good Looking, and Earth.

I also have stuff off cookin records, which is his.

Logical Progression is also a good album which is in the stack.

Platinum Breakz - Metalheadz is a bit of a classic. The new Kosheen album is very listenable.

As Vuk says it's LTJ Buckem (not LTG Bucken)

A good place to start is with Goldie in particular "Angel"

Next move on to Roni Size, and then for some proper drum and bass go for DJ's like "Mickey Finn" and "Grooverider", these are much like LTJ Buckem.

The best stuff is from the early 90's, much of what you hear today is not as good, but getting hold of it is not easy.

Tee he fair enough my spelling is crap, but surely only Vuk would be the one to have point that out...

Have spent all my allowance this month now, (and then some) so this little thread will have to wait till next month.

Will have to pop into Standout in Salisbury next time I am down.

Cheers for the recce's

A few older ones:
More Rockers - Dub Plate Selection Volume 1
From circa 1995, a time before D&B wandered off into a jazzy dead end. The later Dub Plate Selection Volume 2 is strongly related to Smith and Mighty - Big World Small World (i.e some of the tracks are nearly identical) and is good, but not up to the standard of Volume 1.

DJ Kicks - Kemistry and Storm. Hard as nails D&B. Played loud on DBLs it's like colonic irrigation without the large pipe stuffed up your arse when.

DJ Rap - Journey through the land of Drum and Bass. A harder, older sound, again reminiscent of the pre-95 era. Probably pretty hard to get hold of these days.

Moving Shadow Samplers. These are usually £2-3 in shops and some of them are cracking.

Omni Trio - Byte Sized Life. Super funky D&B that will appeal to even those who are generally immune to this style of music.

Ah John I saw the DJ Kicks one on vinyl in Virgin in town, may just have to stretch that little bit further!

Am listening to Eric Claptons self titled on simply vinyl right now, stunning.

Hows about that for chalk and cheese!

If you like Eric Clapton, you should try Eric Clapton and BB King - Riding with the King.

in addition from John Channings recommendations it's worth checking out the following drum and bass compliations. FWIW I don't think abums work as well as the mixed compilations

Darker, energetic, stuff:
Goldie.co.uk
Essential Rewindz - Mixed by Grooverider
Pure Drum and bass - Mixed by Grooverider
Fabric Live - DJ Hype
Blackmarket records presents - Rollin' Vol.2 and 3

More Funkier:
Fabio - Liquid Funk (make sure you get the three CD set with the mix CD)
DJ Marky - The Brazilian Job

Music to spreadsheet to:
Anything by LTJ Bukem

As to labels, Fabio's Creative Source label features more funkier, jazzier stuff, whereas Grooveriders Prototype label is more harder and darker. V Recordings is a very good label too.

The best place to buy drum and bass of quality is Blackmarket records, soho, London - Nicky Blackmarket is one of the pioneers of the scene and you can listen before you buy. And the best place to dance to jungle is Fabric live @ Fabric on Fridays smile smile smile

You certainly have the Xen Cuts compilation on Ninja Tune, don't you? If not all the cuts are "drum and bass" I'd still say this compilation gets my vote as something worth owning.

Or is this compiliation considered to middle of the road or conventional to be worth considering on this thread? (that is an honest question...)

Markus I have heard of the Ninja Tune record label, but assumed it specialised in Ninja Tunes of which I am buying quite a bit at the moment,

Worth a moment of peoples time is Something wicked this way comes by Herbaliser and to a lesser extent more blaxploytation stuff (which IMO is similar) the pulp fusion series

Oh bugger! That'll teach me to double check.

I thought I was being helpful in giving the correct spelling for internet searches, not being a prat pulling Garyi up for his spelling - as he says, that job is taken.

Photek - Form and Function, Modus Operandi
Klute - (the album name escapes me)
Jonny L - Magnetic
v/a Breakbeat Science (think it's on the Volume label)
Muslimgauze - Fedayeen (not strictly dnb, but has some great dnb-ish tracks)

Label - Certificate 18 (Photek/Klute etc)

cheers
