Stop me now, before it's too late!

Please note that there is next to no chance of any further upgrades for a VERY long time!
Am I in mullet territory here?

Hmmm, you're probably right. I must confess I'm smitten!
I thought that the Allaes had a particular affinity for female voices and guitar, which is good, as that makes up a high proportion of my listening :-)
The only thing that bothers me is that the cherry veneer is rather insipid. It's not as rich and colourful as my credos. It's going to be pot luck whether I get a nice looking pair...

The Allea's are an excellent speaker and if treated with respect from new will last for 20 yrs.
Good value......so buy them.

Mick
Any alternative suggestions would be appreciated. Medium sized room. Speakers have to fire across the width, not the length of the room, and can only be a maximum of 1ft from a rear (plasterboard) wall. (Sounds grizly doesn't it!)
Does that narrow it down a little?
I assume its a term of derision?
Would anyone care to enlighten me?
Steve
Do you personally know the people who have slated the Allaes and Naim speakers in the other thread?
If you don't know them then how do you know that they're not completely tone deaf?
Why does someone elses opinion matter anyway?
If you like what the Allaes do in your own system in your own room and to your own ears then go ahead and buy them.
Trust your own ears and don't succumb to peer pressure.
It's the music that matters. However you want to interpret what it should sound like.

Hmmm...The latest Allae thread started by Larry1 has me worried. It could be back to the dem room for me. Although I still like what I have heard of the Allaes....
Trust your ears.

I have had my Allaes for about 5 weeks and they just get better and better (the magic started after about 3 weeks). I don't know if they will get better than this, but let they have revealed limitations in the source (especially LP12 power supply and SACD player) and recordings. To a lesser extent they reveal limitations with amplifiers (eg 135 vs 180) and I haven't had a chance to compare my 102 with better pre-amps. I do not plan to upgrade the speakers for a long time, if that helps.
I've found they need to be placed inches from the back wall. And yes, the mid-range is prominant which means you may need to pay more attention to the room acoustics, especially as it is so pleasurable to play these loud.
I compared carefully to Royd and Shahinian, no contest for sheer enjoyment of the music, effortless drive and more realistic sound IMO. Who cares about imaging? Well my freind said she prefers her car stereo because she is immersed in the sound, still can't resist getting up and dancing when she comes round though, not sure what all this means (the close-to-rear-wall position is definitely convenoent from this point of view). I have realised that some simpler music sounds rather flat and boring now which I consider is progress. I find that the presentation of complex percussion, bass etc and large scale orchestral music is highly addictive (as in live performance).
Listen to a pair that have been well run-in. The music you listen to will change and you may want to upgrade other parts of the system as a result.
That's it for my 2 cents.
Jeremy

I suppose you should be grateful she is not dancing while driving the car!
I only heard the Allaes at a demo at my dealer. Was very favourable!

2) Would someone please direct Steve to the mullet web page?
3) While we're at it, what the hell does "anorak" mean in the context of hi-fi? Thanks.

…is revealing limitations of recordings or upstream components seen as indicating that speakers are better? My ProAcs reveal all - and sometimes this is not a good thing. I've heard several speakers now that are more musical and enjoyable but not as revealing.

Anorak is a derisory expression to indicate someone who is anally retentive.
It derives from the images of 'Train Spotters' who are/were seen as the pinnacle of 'uncoolness' - in Britain we say 'sad'. The stereotype of a train spotter is a pedant who wears an anorak, noting down train numbers when instead he could be socially interacting etc
Thus a hi-fi anorak is someone who appears pre-occupied with hi-fi in itself, rather than socially interacting or even simply enjoying the music.
Hope this helps
Dave
Unfortunately it seems that more recently the definition of mullet only applies to the cost of a product or more importantly the sound quality of a product is consistant with the increase in price, which I think we all know is not always the case.
So in the context of hifi a mullet system may be the following.
Pioneer PD104 CDP>102/180>SBLs
An non mullet system might be:
CDX>102/180>SBLs
FWIW the Pioneer is a crap CDP in every possible way.
What did you do, Tim?
I'm still dithering! I want to listen to the Allaes again, and I'm waiting for my dealer to get his dem pair back from wherever they are currently residing. I'm also trying to draw up a shortlist of similarly priced / spec'd speakers to compare them to....but the only ones currently on the list are the PMC FB1's and my man doesn't stock them!
I'll let you know. Something has to happen soon!
