Naim iSupply?

Posted by: Integrative Service on 01 April 2005

What is included with the Naim iSupply for the Apple iPod? Does it come with a Mini-to-DIN interconnect? If not, does Naim make a Mini-to-DIN? Thanks for you time!

It comes with a DIN to Firewire adaptor.

The iSupply provides 24VDC power only via a DIN-5 240° plug, which is then adapted to a 6-pin (female) FireWire socket plug. An appropriate cable (6-pin to 6-pin FireWire for gen 1 and gen 2 iPods, or 6-pin FireWire to dock connector for gen 3 and later units) then plugs into the FireWire socket plug. You will still need an appropriate interconnect to connect the unit to your system

NaimUSA offers a Chord Chrysalis X51JC-N (1m) or X51JC-L (2m) 1/8" stereo mini-plug to DIN-5 180° interconnect. Please phone us for pricing (website not yet updated) or contact your dealer.

About given up on the idea of powering the iPod via the 552 head units Prefix feed.

Does the iPod always run off it's battery charge, or is that bypassed when it's plugged into an external power supply?

The iSupply will, in fact, charge the unit while in use. It may also be used with the iPod dock, which some have found to be better sonically than the headphone output on top.

The iPod is about the ultimate convenience-level music server. The iSupply takes its performance (plugged into a top flight system) from marginal to quite acceptable. Most of the listening I did yesterday-admittedly background while I was in an adjacent loft area was with the iPod/iSupply.

In the last week I have become more accustomed to the sonic signature of the iPod with and without the iSupply (as well as with the noise generating 552power feed/SPS power supply)and consider the iSupply virtually essential when attempting to recreate any of the gestalt in a musical performance.

If you ever plug an iPod into your main system you NEED an iSupply. And the Chord miniplug/DIN5 connector is just fine-albeit at a cost of more than 50% of the iSupply!

How much is the iSupply and the Chord cable?

I might use this in my 'office system'.

Could someone please explain how devices that use a battery, direct current, benefit from an external power supply?

I just don't understand how a device that runs off batteries can be bettered via any sort of a power supply?

I realize this question is probably better suited in the audio room...sorry. Smile
