Two channel pre with AV2

Posted by: Cjones on 02 November 2003

Good evening:
I have a Naim AV2 connected to an Arcam Diva DVD player and Pass Amps and Joseph speakers. I am looking to integrate a dedicated two channel system into the setup. While Naim recommends the NAC 112, is there any reason why one cannot use a non Naim two channel preamps(Pass, Blue Circle, ML, etc..) Has anyone tried this and with what pre's. Any input would be welcome.

Thank You

CJ

Hi CJ,

I use an AV2 (though on its own, no other pre-amp yet) and I can't see why you would be restricted to Naim only pre-amps.

The only thing you might be missing out on is the unity-gain input on the pre-amp. Naim pre-amps are equipped so that one input can totally bypass the volume control and so become 'slave' to the AV2 (or other make processor) that is upstream.

Hope this helps.

Richard.

The AV2 is not too shabby as a stereo pre-amp itself (in direct mode). The general opinion is that it is almost as good as the 112.

I am not sure what you plan. Are you going to buy a hi quality standalone stereo pre-power amp seperate from the ammp you are using with the DVD player (5.1 I assume)?

Or are you wanting to use the front channel power amps with an add on pre-amp which is higher quality than the AV2?
Either way I would think you would connect the source direct to the 2nd pre-amp rather than go thru'the AV2, so you can choose whatever make of pre-amp/amp you like.
