Spurious method of ageing New Style components?
Posted by: Neil Bennett on 25 June 2002
Is it just me or are the logos on newer "new style" components brighter? In comparing various age stuff from 1989, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2001 it seems to me that the brightness increases with youth. Has anyone else noticed this? If so, is it that the brightness is greater in new components or (more likely, I should imagine) it dims with age, like many other things!? No quantitative data to back this up but it certainly looks to be the case to the eye from a side-by-side comparison. If it wasn't so easy to check vintage from the serial number/web-site, perhaps it would have been a useful way of calibrating age!

I have noticed the same thing. On my new poducts from my dealer, the logo is brighter than on a few peices I bought used (3-5 years old.)
Bet you can get Naim to update the logos to "current specs"

I just cleaning my gear last night and noticed the green facia colouring is different old/new gear.
The old looks better...

IIRC, some time ago I read something about adjusting the brightness of the logo, seemed a quite simple thing to do.
Perhaps Naim or someone who did this can explain in details how to do it.
... or maybe my memomy just plays tricks on me!

I've got some stuff from 92, 95, 97 and 2000
The 92 and 95 stuff is dim (but the same brightness as each other). The 97 and 2000 stuff is bright (but the same brightness as each other).
Additionally, the facia colours are the same for 92 and 95, but different to the 2000 stuff (can't remember about the 97 stuff.
I don't think they fade I think this must have been a consious decesion by Naim to make it brighter. (don't know why). Colour wise I prefer the slightly older 92,95 colouring which is slightly browner than the greener more modern facia.

I don't know whether it is coincidence, but equipment that had/has 240 v on the back seem to be dimmer than the 230v equipment.
Still, either looks much better than the cheapo new plastic logo IMVHO.

I agree... I have noticed the same effect.....the suggestion above could be correct......equipment designed for 240V may well be dimmer than newer kit designed for 230 V. I did contact Naim about this abot 2 years ago when I bought a 9 month old 01, I thought that the bright logo clashed with the digital tuning display...I prefer the more subtle, dimmer lighting...unfortunately naim were unable to help, other than to suggest fitting a resistor. I have also noticed at least 3 different shades of "green" for the fascias...some are more "brown" than others.....rather lets down the fastidious image that Naim like to sustain.
