A good travel tip.

This weeks "Martin's Money Tips".
With the 10 Kg baggage allowance on some budget airlines, one traveller uses a US "survivalist" type jacket with multiple pockets can that can hold,
a laptop, books, passports, clothes and more, plus a bag with 10 Kgs for no charge.

A good piece of lateral thinking I reckon.

yes, but don't you look like a prat?

Bet you would sweat like a sumo wrestler too in this heat.

Include a midget with a Casio in that jacket and you have in flight entertainment.

Another tip, Put your house in your back pocket.
Remember to take it out before you sit down.
Then you'll have somewhere to stay.
At the other end.

Is that a very small house or just a small mind?

I can picture it now. The stampede of Michelin men at the gate.

How do you find your pound coin under all those clothes if you want to use the RyanAir toilet?

Our top travel tip is not to fly.

Stopped 10 years ago. We now enjoy the journeys (trains, boats and car) as well as the holiday. Flying had become horrible I think.

TOP TRAVEL TIP - Don't travel Ryan Air
You will travel to the airport that is at the city that you intend to travel to
You will not have to pay the same again for a taxi to get where you really want to go to
You will avoid the most unhelpful airline on the planet
You will help put the most obnoxious CEO in the business out of a job - unfortunately he has already made a fortune & more so he will continue to not give a shite anyhow.

Which is fine unless you want to go to say, Greece for only a week, or the USA (not sure what the QE? price for that is?).
Of course travelling by car is so un-horrible isn't it?

I don't find the flying so horrible, it's the airports. We too have changed to train/tunnel/cycle for a lot of our holidays, and enjoy the trip. One big disadvantage of the Tunnel is that ALL of your bagage is subject to more or less the same restrictions as air hand baggage.
I was practically wrestled to the floor by Security at Ebbsfleet for having some cycle tools in my bag on a cycle tour holiday.
For flights, I think it is high time that there was a total weight allowance for the; passenger, hold baggage and hand baggage. This would be a much fairer system in terms of the ticket reflecting the fuel cost.

I realise that choosing not to fly rules out certain trips and is not going to be for everybody but we have had better holidays since we stopped. It means making the journey part of the trip, not just something to be endured. We have had no less fun by looking a bit closer to home and perhaps being a bit less obvious in holiday choices. We don't need to fly anywhere.

Who needs to go to Greece anyway-we are having a beautiful summer in Yorkshire.

Are yes the other centre of world culture????? Not!

Not too many bars serving next to the pool or doing a decent Macaroni pie either. Razz

Oh dear, Howard,
And do you still have "Here be Dragons" showing north of Watford Gap on your maps? As a Cestrian, born a Lancastrian, I recognise the shortcomings of Yorkshire, but they do have the essentials, I assure you.

H lives in the shadow of Gatwick, he is well disposed to air travel. I'm with Bruce, it's the pits these days. Amazing to think that a form of travel that we were in serious danger of making enjoyable 10 years ago ...has become such a nightmare.

I would rather eat worms than fly Ryan Air, I'm afraid those who haven't learned that lesson deserve everything they get.

The secret to getting the most out of holiday travel is to consider the journey as part of the holiday, from the moment you walk out of the door, and just go with it. It recently took us around 24 hours to get from England to a Greek Island and the journey involved walking, trains, flying (Easyjet - great company), bus, overnight stay in Rafina, ferry and car. All very enjoyable and full of experiences. This attitude is beautifully summed up in the poem ‘Ithaca’ by CP Cavafy.

A good book is essential though.

I actually like airports – maybe because I worked on one for a year.

My passport expired in 1997, and I'm in no hurry to renew. Nearly 150 odd flights means that I'm bored of it all. I love N Yorks and Northumberland, detest all airports and their staff, security and sign posting.

I can enjoy a week in the Nag's Head, include fuel, meals and drinks for less than a week in a mediocre hotel in the med. And I can be there in less than the time ii have to be at Stansted BEFORE a flight.
And if the weather turns inclement, I take even more photos!

no 'bah tat, surely?

I would like to state for the record, following the scurrilous accusations made by the honourable member for South Horsham:-

"I have not now or at any time previously, and have no intention of buying or indeed wearing Union Jack shorts(which would probably be "longs"anyway)".

If I was that way inclined they would be cross of St George shorts!!

Ryanair is fine as long as you stay within the rules. If you carry too much baggage then its your fault you get hit on surcharges.

The only time I boycott air travel is when going on a cruise. It is more convenient and more civilised to take a boat from the UK and suffer no weight restrictions than to say fly to America only to be abused by their immigration officials.

My sister and hubby have just taken off 00:36 for Corfu from Gatwick.
Not much to write home about but they were scheduled to take off Saturday at 20:35, those lovely people at Monarch have managed to find an aeroplane of theirs that actually works.28+ bloody hours amazing and not a sniff of ash.

If you knew anything about US Postal Service employees, you'd see why they'd strip search you for weapons at Customs. Big Grin
