Cheaper n-Sub
Posted by: JonathanP on 13 February 2006
As I am researching home theatre options, the the n-Sats matched to an N-vi certainly looks well worth auditioning. However, the n-Subs pricing looks somewhat out of kilter with the rest of such a system. I am sure is a superb sub-woofer, but are there any alternatives more in line with the rest of the system price-wise?

Have a look at the Epos sub - its pretty good & keenly priced (£380 here)

Jonathan,
Personally I think the n-Sub is correctly priced for the system it's in. When you compare the price of satellites and subs the better solutions often work out to a similar ratio.
That said, you're looking for a cheaper sub. I have been very impressed by the velodyne and M&K subs, mainly because of their lack of cabinet resonance. Both these brands make very good subs indeed. The RELs, particularly the ST range, are still in the mix but they suffer from more cabinet resonance than the others mentioned here.
Now I haven't tried matching the subs to an n-Sat system so I'm not sure which of the two I'd choose, but I'd hanker a guess at the Velodyne. Both Velodyne and M&K make subs in the sub-£1000 bracket. The only other sub I'd consider is the B&W PV-1 which is very good indeed, but at £1000 it's almost the price of the n-Sub so I don't see the point there.

Have a look at the BK Subs particularly the XLS200
I have one and am amazed by how good it is for the money

In the context of a Naim system I would be looking at BK's Monolith. [at around £400 online direct from the manufacturers ] If you don't like it you can send it back to BK. I haven't heard one but it has an excellent reputation on the AV forums and tested very well.

With respect Simon, RELs have not been price/performance competitive for some time in the AV/LFE stakes. I've read posts on AV forums from owners of even the very pricey Studio models which have failed to deliver the goods on films.
I think one may presume that Jonathon (the thread OP) was looking for an AV subwoofer since he posted on this (the HT) forum, rather than HiFi Corner. If he wants affordable very sound quality with very high SPLs at very low frequencies he might do better looking at SVS. They get rave reviews (when they are reviewed by respected AV professionals) Though they are very large boxes (and tubes) in comparison with the RELs. Which they need to be in order to perform at this level.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
I am under family pressure to put together an AV system. My main system is Naim but in a different room to the one in which the AV set-up would be placed. An n-Vi/n-Sats system is one possible system, yet pricing-wise the n-Sub at about the same price as two pairs of n-Sats looks to me somewhat disproportionately high (although I am in now way doubting it is worth the price asked). With Arivas/Allaes at the front it would somehow feel more in-keeping price-wise. So I am curious as to what others think and also what alternative options have been considered/used as I suspect I am far from the only one to have been in this position.
