It sounds pretty good musically. Has some well defined bass in the tracks. Same old Paul Simon song forms but quite pleasant

Although I like/buy all Paul Simon I can, I still enjoy playing Surprise CD now and then, having spun it a lot on its release.

Apart from e.g. his standard aging-bloke song forms, Surprise seemed an attempt to get digital at last with Eno etc all over it.

Bought it last year, didn't like it for a long time, finally got into it this year. It sounds a bit more modern and streamlined than the last one.

A veryt under-rated Simon CD, if you haven't got it, is Rhythm of the Saints. Sounds fantastic and overlooked after the success of Graceland.

Second that.

I just bought it on a whim and I must say I am enjoying it.

There is no 'sound of silence' genius on it but i like 'how can you live in the north east' and, yes, eno's 'sonic landscape' is all over it...not a bad thing.

I've had it for a while, was listening to it this afternoon and I like it. There's been rather a kerfuffle in the media about this being a prime example of a cd being mastered/produced to be LOUD - with consequent frequency capping at both ends. The music's been topped'n'tailed, so to speak. Quite why Simon would countenance this is beyond me, as he was never going to get much airplay anyway.

Regardless, it's not exactly unlistenableSmile

I want to love it but I just can't. I find it, if not unlistenable, then hard going sonically. There's no real dynamics as such and musically it tails off rather rapidly for me. The sonics are just standard Eno stuff and I can't help but think they disguise some poor melodies. The lyrics are consistently interesting. I just think it's a shame about the rest of it.

Well, I quite like it - its not his best but ist still above average.

He played some of it live at the NEC in Dec when I saw him, and the tracks stood up well.
