HDX Ripping
Posted by: JB76 on 10 June 2009
Is it possible to use the HDX to copy or save files to a network device once full?
Have a sneaking feeling the HDX ripping generates better quality files but want to be able to use on other devices without needing to rip more than once.
Any advice/insight on this. Smart way to go would seem to be just rig up a 1tb seagate drive as overflow and share files with that but not sure if you can copy HDX database over?

There's a long queue forming, standing around patiently in true Brit style, until July (latest estimate), when a new software version will apparently bring this function, amongst others....

It can be shared with network sharing and you can move files but organizing is up to you. If you want to move cds with info, you'll currently need to move them one at a time and and attach with a player. Less than a minute per disk but not as freindly as the new update will probably make it. If you just put it to a player's library with location in this way it can probably be done without moving the file.

js - Could you write that all again, in English !?
I understand the HDX can be seen across a network, and obviously will play from a NAS etc (non HDX files obviously, excepting Apple Lossless that is), but as I understood it ripped files could NOT be taken off the HDX, at least by the user anyway (a ridiculous situation)....I've read at least a couple of posters here who have filled their internal 400Gb and are awaiting the new software....
Ripping TO an external location isn't such a big deal as the ability to MOVE to a external location afterwards (in a easy manner), at least in my eyes anyway....I've always seen the HD's in the HDX as a oversized buffer - actually, they should be smaller, not larger (you are never going to have a drive big enough for eventual needs) so should just be there for ripping purposes and holding a minimum amount of albums, until they are moved to their final location.....
I really hope this update comes soon and rectifies a couple of, quite frankly, bizarre software flaws on the HDX....I would love one, but just could not seriously purchase one at £4.5k as it presently stands....

SC,
That's an interesting way to see the internal HD. And I agree with you.
Of course, the current impossiblity to move album away is a safe situation for Naim regarding copyrights issues.
JS,
yes, please, be more specific, mostly when you say:
''If you want to move cds with info, you'll currently need to move them one at a time and and attach with a player''.
We are all very interested to know how you can do that.

If you set your network for sharing, you can pull files off the HDX via network access. You can then erase form the HDX locally if you ever want to change the local library. I'm not sure but I think you can actually play from it's drive if you set things up right. I think we did once but it hasn't come up. If you want to use the files elsewhere with data, it's easiest to move one album at a time as then it will make sense to the player software for tagging. If you move more, they'll line up by track # as 1111111,2222222 and not album so you'll never get it organized. You can move all the files together as they stay organized as albums but you need to show them to the player one at a time. Having the player search a folder that you created and dragged into would be a good way. New software will help with some or all of this in the future. Good luck and the rest is for you to figure out with your dealer as it's actually much easier to do than to describe. At least you now know it can be done. I put about a dozen albums taken from an HDX with all info on my mp3 player before vacation in this way.

JS - thanks for the info. Still sounds a phaf, but at least it seems possible then...As you say, hopefully the update will somewhat automate a lot of this.....It surprises me this isn't more widely known....
Ah, well, herein lies another problem with the HDX, or rather Naim's rigid control of it....My dealer is 6000 miles away. And I'm sure I'm not the only current or potential customer to live many miles away from the bright lights of London or New York and the knowledgeable Naim dealers existing there..! I mean, even the very implementation of the updates themselves, i.e no download, is rather a pain in the ass for some HDX owners in the world....And Naim want to reach out to more of the main market ?!
Patrick F - If this relates to the subject discussed here on post, why not expand here for us all to benefit from ? Keeping it amongst the 'club' of trade members reinforces just that...

Because some members revolt very strongly to even the suggestion that Itunes isn't perfect in every way. We are then assigned agendas and it gets old. As it's been beaten to death, you can find it easily by searching for EAC.
