Record Flattening Service
Posted by: RichardD on 16 October 2010
Hi. I have a very good/mint condtion 2nd hand Iron Maiden Fear of the Dark. Apart from one of the discs is warped- the label seems to stick up the the middle and hence the record is slightly cupped.Does anyone know of anyway I can flatten the record.
I know there is a machine that does this which costs a fortune- Is anyone aware of anyone in the UK who has one who provides this service.
Thanks
Richard

Place between two sheets of glass in the sun is one option; but where are you going to find sun in Leeds this time of the year?
It is pretty simple in principal. You need to gently warm and then cool the record whilst holding it perfectly flat between two flat, smooth, hard, inert surfaces. Ensure the record and flattening surfaces are super clean, or you risk pressing gunk into the surface of the disc. Start with very gentle temperatures and work slowly up until it stays flat. An oven with a very good temperature control might be a good option.

About 25 years ago I read a story about curing records of warping…
It said to place warped record in-between 2 glass rega platters, bolt finger tight together and warm in oven for a short while, and this means very warm only (not hot!) for 15-20 minutes.
Allow the cooling process to take place over a couple of hours before releasing.
i don’t know if doing this actually works but would be interesting to try it. i have plenty of old crappy warped records to practise this on but don’t like the idea of risking a couple of rega glass platters.

You need the Furutech DFV-1 LP Flattener which is an effective, safe way to flatten warped records. Put simply, it slowly heats and flattens a warped record over 90 minutes and then returns it to room temperature over the next two hours, resulting in a flat record for perfect playback.
A snip at £1400.
