I have his "Live from the Union Chapel" disc. It's very good as well.

yep - I stumbled across a live session on BBC4 (I think) and was blown away. I think his use of the cello is really great. He could skip the silly taped up microphones tho'

Don't get me started. This is the most hype, least substance album I've heard in years with his fey, tuneless warbling.

If you like it fair enough but I can't implore you enough to also try things like Nick Drake, James Yorkston, Elliott Smith, Jose Gonzalez (Growing on me rapidly at the moment), Turin Brakes, Vic Chesnutt among others. They do a similar thing but so much more effectively.

To me Damien Rice so badly wants to be that gentle yet, gritty male singer songwriter that the above acts seem to be successful at but misses the mark by a yard....IMHO obviously.

Jonathan,

Why do you assume we don't already listen to those other artists you mentioned? Out of the stable you listed, Elliot Smith has the same effect on me that Damien Rice seems to have on you. But I'm not going to go slamming him or his fans on any Elliot Smith threads.

There's room for it all.

Sorry to offend you jayd. Really don't mean to.

Just though someone might like to try other similar but far better acts that DR desparately tries to emulate. They rely on talent rather than friends in high places to get them by.

Enjoy Damien's next album - if he gets round to making one.

That's the point. Tried 'em. Already enjoy many of them.

Anyway, no prob. At least I don't have to dread the next Elliot Smith release.

I bought 'O' after watching a bit of live Knebworth and catching him do a live rendition of one of the songs from the album. I played it at home and wondered why I'd gone to all the trouble (it had proved elusive) and put it in the CD rack 'to mature'.

I now think it's absolutely lovely. Go figure.

To date - this CD for me has been clssed in the category as Jeff Buckley Grace - not sure what all the fuss is about. i will get it out today and give it another spin and hopefully it will come to me in the same way as it did for Frank.

Gave it another run through and there were some bits that were pretty OK but overall still find it a little dull and uninspiring.
