nic,
good plan - top 15 vinyl & CD. Interesting as some old vinyl albums are great 30 minute masterpieces, but remastering and extended length have certainly woken up some old albums (sloppy remastering killing an equal number as well)

Neve sure with top 15s, seems to vary with day, weather, mood and age. Will think about this.

BTW - re Milcho, I seem to remember you got one of the MA recordings, they are all great.

That's true - I didn't think "Editor's Choice" or "Saucy Haulage Ballads" counted as they are eepees rather than fully albums. Also "Live at Manchester" is a VHS video.

There are lots of records that give me enourmous pleasure that are not by HMHB, but since I first encountered them, I just feel they are as ggod as it gets.

"5000 Spirits" by ISB has been one of my favourite records since I first heard it nearly 40 years ago and Shirley Collins is just wonderful - her voice and the songs she shings are something I can always listen to.

Of course the Beatles and the Kinks and many others should be in everybody's top 15. In fact, I could probably rattle off over 100 albums that sould be in my top 15 and I haven't even mentioned Creedence Clearwater Revival, Alice Cooper, Third World War or the Desperate Bicycles, and even neglected the master of all song writes: Syd Barrett.

There's some great records on your list BTW.

All the best, Rotf

    3. Lee Scratch Perry and the Dub Syndicate – Time Boom X De Devil Dead

Shows a high incidence of two of my major obsessions – Adrian Sherwood and Bill Laswell. My third obsession, Pete Namlook, doesn’t appear because most of his stuff is on CD.

No it's not cheating. If I were on Desert Island Disc - I'd want to take Rubble with me - it's a 20 CD set.

Some great music and interesting choices. I love Nick Drake's music, but find Pink Moon very difficult to enjoy - I think it is an excellent album, but there is more than a hint of sadness about it and is seems almost too personal. I am interested that you should choose it over Five Leaves Left. I've always thought Nick a fantastic guitarist even if he did use the most odd tuning patterns (he apparently used to detune his guitar in different ways for different songs to get excactly the sound that he wanted).

I must try the JT album in your list - I'm not familiar with much live Tull: I've concentrated on the studio albums, which is remiss of me, as their reputation live is second to none.

    Rotf

BTW - one of favourite elpees is called Bobby's Dazzlers and is a set of highlights from the 1978 cup final.

Pink Moon vs Five Leaves - it was/is a very close call! And my choice may be different tomorrow!

I adore "Five Leaves" - hearing it for the first time as 12 year old on the original Witchseason pressing (belonged to a friend's sister - we nabbed it and a whole load more vinyl, including Rory, to listen to whilst she was at univ) is an indespensible part of my musical upbringing. I love Danny Thompson* too (my wife went to school with his son, the drummer Danny - that's pretty lame name-dropping!) and Robert Kirby's arrangements.

[*To digress, one of my greatest musical joys was when he came on stage at the Gomez Cambridge Cornex gig to play 'In Our Gun' - Mrs JWM and I had only said on the way "wouldn't it be funny if DT turned up..." Sadly few of the assembled crowd realised just WHO he is!!]

But there is something about the utterly desperate "Pink Moon", and the stripped down sound of the man and his instrument. (And perhaps one ought to have every human emotion represented in one's selection of 15?)

And I love the live Tull (as well as studio Tull). More or less wore out my copy of "Live! Bursting Out" on my Trio 1033B and Ortofon FF15EmkII at univ in the early '80s, late at night listening to it endlessly whilst trying to write extended essays about Athens and Sparta!

    James

Delighted to hear about 'Bobby's Dazzlers'. My best is the VHS video of the '78 cup final...
